The kits im looking at are the ones that are drawing from the filter location which from my understanding is the highest pressure point and it is filtered with the way the kit is designed..which save for the poor hardening quality of the cams should save them from serious harm since there is considerably more flow and pressure then the stock supply.

on a side note it appears my parts bike has an oiling mod done because there is a braided steel line going down from the heads down to the crank case of the engine

Too right it is, the Gen 5 is easily the sportiest of the lot.

The Gen 5 has a stiffer pivotless frame with pro-arm engine mounted swingarm, a more powerful RVF750 based engine, is lighter at a meer 208kg's compared the Gen 4's much fatter 211kgs  and with its side mounted radiators using Honda's mass centralization has a naturally quicker turn in.

I was at a benefit ride last week and I saw a 1984, it was great to see it and hear it run. The owner was checking out my bike and the years between didn't matter. It was great to see the two red white & blue VFR's together. I think we make more of "which is better" than anybody really cares about. We ride what we prefer or what we are willing to try to find and fit in our budgets. That then becomes the best to us. Sometimes its because of a color that is only available in certain years or just what was new when we were ready to buy. I would ride a Gen 5 if I didn't have my 2007 but the Gen 6 is current and has things that I like, plus I could get the RWB paint that I liked when they first came out.

As far as looks, I'm torn between the body style of the 5th gen and 6th gen. One thing I love about the fifth gen is it's smooth, more stylish body lines, what I love about the 6th gen is it's more sharp, racy body lines and aggressive stance. What makes me like the 6th gen styling more is the exhaust tucked under the seat, I think it just makes it look more sleek, my opinion only. Is there an exhaust kit for the 5th gen that allows one to run it under the seat? As far as riding one, I have rode neither but have ALWAYS loved the look, stance, overall prowess, and appeal of the Interceptor. I wouldn't know how to choose between most of the motor stuff you guys have an abundant knowledge about. I enjoy reading the reviews as they are the most informative way for a person like myself to become educated. I don't really pay much attention to magazine reviews or critic reviews as they are probably similar to electronics reviews, EXTREMELY biased.

Well said. I am a VFR / Interceptor fan of all generations. I've owned at least one since 1990. Beyond a doubt, there is too much bickering about which Gen is best. This is a question that will NEVER be answered because is doesn't need to be and can't be. We should all be supporting each other instead of creating division. My plan is to someday own one bike from each generation - I like the bike that much. When I think about the Interceptor, I don't view it as a bike from a certain Gen, I view it as a bike with history. Kind of like a Corvette, Mustang, etc.

I didn't mean for people to debate which gen is better, only to give THEIR opinion on which is better and to explain why. It helps me look at things from different views in decision making processes such as this. I wish I had the opportunity to ride one from each generation, that would make the decision easy but unfortunately the internet is the only tool I have to assist me. I do appreciate everyones input and hope it continues as I value each's opinion as the members here have much more experience than I could ever hope for. I have admired this piece of art known as "Interceptor" for quite some time and my wife finally gave me the financial go ahead on the purchase of one.....hopefully I will join the ranks of a proud owner in the not to distant future. Thnx again!

I've owned 7 V4 Hondas but in my opinion the '98 and '99 met my criteria for "best". I did tons of research before I bought my latest...49-state '98 with
2,800 miles on the dial. I narrowed my search to the 98/99 models mostly because of what they didn't have on them, namely, VTEC, Catalytic exhaust,
ABS, and I like where the stock muffler is located. Also the '98 has the larger header pipes and the lowest weight of the 5th and 6th generations. Looks are subjective but IMHO the less radical look of my bike (2 headlights, etc.) with a more rounded fairing) is pleasing to the eye. I am not too wild about the sharp radical looks of the latest 2007 bikes. Also it would have been nice to have more color options rather than slut red, but I seem to be getting use to it. So my friend, my suggestion is to do lots of side by side comparisons. Only you can determine in each category...performance, looks, ergonomics, cost, etc. which one meets your "best" criteria.

raced it, rode it to Wisconsin twice, & commuted on it, & sold it :frown: with 120,000 miles on it running Prrrrfect & is still running today with the original stock motor.

Bought & built a spare race motor for it that I didn't use until this year that I built more & thats now in a '05 VFR that I can say is a # 1 VFR now  .

I've owned a 4th and now own a 5th gen and have pretty good miles on a 6th. - First you cant go wrong with a clean example of any of these! (Even a 3rd)
    - For a while I had both my 4th and 5th at the same time, and I felt that the 4th for some reason felt a little smaller than the 5th. I rode the 4th for thousand mile trips, day twisty rides, and generally anywhere. I still think its the best looking viffer - a little Ducati-ish. A very sweet ride. I got the urge for more performance and that is why I bought the 5th - it will smoke the 4th, handles better and way more power. 98-99 are the ones to get.
6th? Well I'm not gonna say much about the 6th other than I cant stand the thing. Its a fine ride but not for me.

Yes... I do realize that I'm lighting a fuse, but hey.... we all have to start somewhere. 28 now and have never owned a bike. Have admired the viffer for years and now that I'm financially stable enough to afford one comfortably, I thought this would be the place to get some pretty good opinions. Yours, was exactly what I was looking for. Some first hand experience and reasons why you felt, PERSONALLY, that one gen might be better than another, not taking anything away from the other gens of course. I will take my licking being a noob, as everyone has, and simply take it as constructive criticism.

Be sure to let us know what you decide on. You can't go wrong no matter what you choose. Like I said, my goal is to acquire 1 perfect specimen from each generation. I've got 2 right now, but 3 Interceptors total. I just can't part with my 500.

For the price and the fact that it'll be your first bike I would suggest a 2000-2001 from the info given on these boards.
You've got, affordable buying price, likely reasonable insurance rates and an excellent selection out there advertised on the market right now.

You can't go wrong at all with Hondas VFR!

Good luck and fire up a pic when ever you purchase your new ride man....

    DD

ps-I think the 3rd Generation is definetely the nicest looking of the bunch!

Eventually i would enjoy having a 4th gen VFR to go with my bike but for now i enjoy riding my 1st gen VF. Just the sound of that 1st gen V4 getting up into its powerband and starting to scream sends shivers down my spine every time.

I'm actually really torn, but think I'm leaning towards the 5th gens. I fell in love with the VFR with the 5th gen. As I said, a buddy had a 2000 and oh how sweet it looked. I think the 6th gen definitely has more of a "crotch rocket" look to it with it's sharper lines....

I've had a late 1990's a 2000 and now a 2005. They are all awesome and you can't go wrong... I JUST got the 2005 so I can't say with 100% accuraccy but I'd say the 2000 was a little faster but it did have a remus exhaust, which mine will soon have again. The 2000 was maybe a little quicker to turn too but I think as I get used to the new bike it would be a close call. The vtec is pretty sweet, feels like a turbo. The new bike sure is sweet don't get me wrong.... Again, you can't go wrong.

My only comment is that this is a lot of bike for a first bike, it ain't no scooter that's for sure...

You think this may be too much bike for me? I have some experience riding but yes, it is very limited. Suggestions and open criticism welcome.
