I have a Givi V46 top case, and a member here (local to me) is selling a set of color matching OEM side bags for only $400. I can't use them together though from what I've read. My question is: how much convenient storage would I be gaining? I can fit 2 helmets in the top case. The way the side luggage opens it just doesn't seem that functional for me. Like if I had a bag of groceries it would be hard to secure since the side cases open like a clam. Why don't they open from the top like soft side cases?

No idea why they don't open from the top like you wish they did. What I know is that the top box works perfect for lane-splitting for me on my commute.
You can fit a helmet in each side bag.

For day-to-day use I think most will agree that a top case is far more convenient. Side cases are awkward to get in and out of, and bulky.

I use the top case for running around, and add the side cases when traveling.

Side opening cases can be fitted with solenoid locks. Great for dumping trash when nobody is looking. One really great use for a topcase is to line them with a big heavyduty trash bags, fill the bags with water and do some really awesome wheelies. I do not advise same for stoppies.

They still don't approve of lane splitting here in Florida. But I can have my gun on my hip, so its a fair trade.

Though almost legal across canada, lane splitting is frowned apon and depending on the cop can net you a shiny new fine and possibly a nice encounter with a judge. Still cant carry my gun though.

I use the Givi Top Case 53L - great for all around use and most week long trips is big enough with a decent tank bag... only take note throwing 40-50lbs that high up does make for different ride characteristics in the corners...

The Side Bags I would guess open up like clam shells due to functionality... if they were to open from the top it would be a very small openning and useless for a helmet - otherwise to make them useful opening from the top the back of the bike would have to be the width of a beetle...

I have just not long ago acquired hard side bags. Had been using soft for a few years. Also used a soft tail bag as well but have been thinking of getting a hard tail back.

But one problem I run into is that I do not have the flexibility to easily throw my legs over the bike with the tail bag on. Even with the soft bag, which is maybe 1/4 the height of the hard, I have to mount the bike by standing on the foot rest and throwing my leg over. So, if I get a hard bag, I really don't see it being a routine fixture on my bike.

That brings me to this. Just what is the hard tail bag like to easily attach and remove? I have looked at them at shows but am just not convinced this is the way for me to go. Also, I don't really want a pile of mounting hardware all over the back of my bike. That is what deterred me from getting hard saddle bags in the first place.

Lane splitting with the narrow Givi's is ok but with the bigger 40L bags I don't tempt it. The trunk case is just so much more useful to me, for every reason mentioned. Plus I have a two piece 'Stich that fits in the trunk, with my narrow 20L side cases I'd have to split it up every time.

And yes Virginia, it appears it is now legal to carry that gun on your hip in Cali, recent Cali Supreme Court ruling.

I assume that your present soft tailbag sits partially on the seat. I have a Givi E52 topcase and it sits far enough back that I've never been concerned about leg clearance, but I'm still pretty fit and limber for 57.

The Givi also couldn't be easier to remove, no more difficult than popping it open.

I LOVE my topcase. I can fit my 'stich (with back and hip protectors) in it with room left over. I park my bike at the back of my garage where it's extended, but have to back in between two cars. Even with the cars squeezed to the sides, I suspect that sidecases would make that scary or I'd end up taking them off if both cars are parked.

Normally I use the topbox (topcase) as the first option - its quick to fit and remove, does not affect the width of the bike and is pretty large 45litres? It can easily hold two full face helmets (if you dump the internal floor mat) and you may even be able to squeeze in a couple of motorbike jackets. The big downside of a top box is it adds extra weight high up to a bike which is already pretty top heavy - making low speed handling even more challenging especially if you go mad and the top box is stacked full of cans of beer!

So when I need to carry anything heavy (or need extra space on longer tours) then I normally also attach the panniers, or use a bungee netting system to hold heavy stuff securely on the pillion seat. NB if you believe Honda's official maximum loading nonsense - then if you have the factory carrier, topcase and panniers then you can barely carry any weight inside them - which rather defeats their purpose. I have routinely stuffed them to the gunnels on longer tours without any issues, and rather treat those limits as another example of a limit dreamed up by lawyers rather than a real structural one.

As for the pannier - clamshell opening issue, it can be solved for very little money - just buy some stretch netting and fit it across the bottom half of the pannier anchoring it in place with screws. The netting will then keep stuff in place when the lid is open and stretches aside to allow the whole space to be filled if required. (NB you may find some larger size full face helmets will not fit inside the panniers).

As for the OEM top box, I quickly decided to remove the retaining strap which annoyingly limits the lid being opened fully. Once the strap is removed, the lid can open to around 180 degrees and provides a handy place in the lid section to put your helmet and gloves whilst stowing shopping in the top-box.

I like my givi's. 20l each and only add about 8 inches aside. I wish they were deeper and longer but the width is great. Ive looked at the oem ones and still cant come to the 1800cad needed to get them....
