I sympathize with you ftl900. At least here in Quebec we have ethanol-free gas to choose from...

    Here's what my congressman said:
    Dear Mr. Ahlfield:
Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mandate regarding E15 fuel. As your Representative, I appreciate hearing from you about this important issue.
As you know, the EPA mandate states that a minimum purchase of four gallons of E15 fuel, a fuel blend consisting of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline, is the necessary amount to buy at service stations. The reason for the minimum purchase volume is to protect the engine of the next customer’s vehicle, as the fueling hose retains roughly a third of a gallon from the previous customer’s fill-up. To help keep E15 out of these and other engines, service stations offering E15 and E10 from the same pump station must agree to sell a minimum volume of four gallons of fuel to the customer.
The EPA has yet to approve the use of E15 fuel for motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, or home electrical appliances, due to the increased risk of accidental fire dangers. In addition, the EPA acknowledges that not everyone purchasing fuel will need four gallons, which creates a challenge of enforcing the mandate. The organization plans to conduct an E15 Compliance Survey to determine if additional misfueling mitigation measures are necessary to prevent motorists from experiencing engine damage. Under the mandate, the EPA is requiring fueling stations that sell E15 and E10 fuel from the same hose and nozzle to use additional labeling to inform consumers about the minimum purchase requirement.
You may be interested to know that my colleague Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner introduced H.R. 875 to provide a comprehensive assessment of the scientific and technical research on the implications of the use of mid-level ethanol blends. Currently, this bill has been referred to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and House Energy and Commerce Committee where it awaits further action. Please rest assured I will keep your thoughts in mind should this bill come before the House floor for a vote.
Thank you again for contacting me. Please keep in touch by liking my Facebook page, following me on Twitter, signing up for my e-newsletter, or by visiting my website.

True. When Bush started it it sounded like a good idea @ the time. Now we know otherwise but Barry keeps ratcheting it up. That's the difference.

And...the sound of ratcheting it down starts...

    http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com...to_the_U_S_marketplace_may_stall_in_2014.aspx

The federal Renewable Fuel Standards program, which the EPA administers, requires that 18.15 billion gallons of renewable fuels such as ethanol be blended into gasoline and diesel fuel in 2014. The standards ensure that transportation fuel sold in the United States contains a minimum volume of renewable fuel as required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

On Nov.15, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy took advantage of that flexibility by recognizing the "blend wall" and proposed reducing the amount of renewable fuels to be blended in 2014 from 18.15 billion gallons to a proposed range of 15.0 to 15.52 billion gallons, with a recommendation of 15.21 billion gallons.

Who was pres in '07? (Not to say that Senator Barry didn't vote for it. Someone go look it up on Wikipedia.)

edit: Ok, yes, Mr. "I did inhale, that was the point," voted for it in the Senate.

It's being "proposed". & doesn't stop E10. Which is already doing damage.

Another and even larger problem with ethanol is the dumb fucks that insist on drinking it in large quantities and either riding a bike or driving a cage.

You mean like the Police Officer who filled his 540hp Special Pursuit Vehicle with E10 :loco: and blowing its engine.

" Police have rebuilt a specially modified highway patrol car that suffered catastrophic engine damage when it was filled with the wrong fuel late last year.

The Ford Falcon-based FPV GT required significant repairs after an officer apparently filled it with E10 fuel that the NSW government mandated as part of a push for cleaner emissions.

NSW Police built the special Falcon GT as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.

The hot-rodded car has 400kW (540hp) of power, well more than the 335kW maximum available to Ford customers.

The GT was the most powerful Australian police car when it went into service, though it has now been surpassed by a 430kW (576hp) Holden HSV GTS also run by NSW Police.

Fairfax Media understands that an officer filled the Ford with E10 fuel – a blend of 90 per cent regular unleaded and 10 per cent ethanol - as opposed to the high octane juice recommended by Ford.

The NSW government has effectively abolished regular unleaded and encourages drivers to use E10, claiming it is “cheaper, cleaner and greener” and that “most NSW cars that use [unleaded fuels] can safely use 10 per cent ethanol-blended fuel (E10)”.

It’s understood the misfuelling cracked the block of the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, something that could have cost upwards of $5000 to repair. "

That article is a bit misleading. The fact it blew was probably due to it just being regular octane, not that it had ethanol in it. Premium gas around here still has ethanol in it. Ethanol itself is an octane booster, the higher the octane the greater resistance to burning. The fact he used regular means the mix was combusting too early before the piston reached TDC, and resulting in preignition. Tamer engines this would probably just result in a bit of knock, but on that beast would be severe enough to blow it up.
