Hello all. I'm having an electrical issue and need guidance on what to do next. When I turn on my ingnition swith, I get no power. The headlight does not come on, no dash light, nothing. I've checked the main fuse and all the dash fuses, and they're all fine. The battery is new, by the way, and checked out fine. The Clymers manual is very ambiguous as to how to trouble shoot this issue. Can anyone provide any 'next steps' in resolving this issue.

    Thanks.

First thing to do is check all the connects are plugged in tight. My '83 died on me one night and it turned out to be one connector was unplugged behind the fairing.

    Good luck!

Start at the battery and work your way out testing at every connection. Verify you have power where you should and ground where you should.

Always verify your power and ground first when troubleshooting.

Did you test the main fuse with a multi-meter or just look at it?

Thanks for all of the answers so far. I only did a visual inspection of the main fuse. I'll try the multi-meter next.

same thing I was thinking. On my wifes ninja, the white plug from the ignition switch comes unplugged under the gas tank and you can see it. Once you lift the tank it's obvious, then plug it in and voila, starts up just fine...

Check your Ignition switch. On the older bikes they have a history of going bad. I had one go bad on me. Good luck.

The ignition switch has a pivoting thing in the base, and the contacts wear. You can take it apart, you line up the tabs and it can be opened. You may be able to put something under the bottom part of the switch, to shim it up and make the contacts work again. Either that, or you can buy a new base that will fit in under your existing key cylinder. That way you can keep the same key, that matches your gas tank.
