    Hello Gentlemen:

need your help ...again. I own a 1998 VFR, which I love however, due to declining joints and bones, (I'm 58 and broken) I need to change my seating position to be more upright.

I have reviewed helibars and peg lowering. These adjustments change seating angle from 30 degrees to 24 degrees and extend legs from 86 degrees to 91 degrees, as indicated by the motorcycle ergonomics website.

My question: other than selling bike, what other options do I have?...as I cant bring myself to a Goldwing yet.

If I do the above stated changes, I am not sure they would be enough to lessen my pain. Note: I can tolerate the legs but not the upper body angle.

As always thanks in advance to all who respond.

    :distracted:

I have tried my bike (98 VFR) with stock and helibars and can't honestly say I notice a huge difference. The seating position on my f800gs is quite a bit more upright and I notice my back is much more comfortable on it for long rides. Never tried lowering pegs, though.

One thing that I do and I know a few other long distance riders do also is keep the back pegs on for an alternate place to put your feet sometimes. When you are riding a logn way sometimes it is nice to put your shins on back pegs with toes down for a while or stand on a front peg and a back peg to kind of stretch one direction then the other. Anything to break the monotony.

Not sure if "reviewed" means you have tried the various changes or have just done the arithmetic.

Great advice by Reg..which could include stopping, getting off the bike and having a Jo-jo or two whilst looking at the scenery.

Helibars made a big difference for me. I haven't tried anything else.

The Op was really asking about upright seating though so I kind of went off topic. As far as my heli bars, I use them, but I only seem slightly more upright with them versus my stock bars. My back still hurts. I notice that my wrists get a little more weight with stock bars so they are slightly less comfortable. I think possibly those convertibars someone mentioned get you quite a bit more upright.

Didn't someone put some alternate handlebars on like dirtbike bars or something? That would bring you up quite a bit I think.

I am 6'1" and I have severe back, knee, and shoulder issues from a horrific car accident with a semi 20 years ago. It took me 3 months to walk again and a year without any assistance. (wheelchair, walker, crutch, and lastly a cane) My shoulder is my most recent surgery and they want to operate on my back now. I say all this so you know that I am not one of those guys that pulls a muscle in his back and tries to say "I know how you feel".

I put peg lowering blocks, Sargent seat, and Helibars on my 99. You will not believe how much difference that made in the ergo's. Since doing that, I have had no issues with numb hands & legs & back spasms. Don't get me wrong, you still have to know your limits to the amount of time you are on the bike, but you will have that on any bike. Another member here (mello dude) owns a 98 and he said the difference in ergo's was astonishing. It made it feel like completely different bike (ergonomically speaking of course).

If you are concerned that the Helibars are not going to give you enough up and back, consider the Convertibars. I have no experience personally with them, but they are supposed to be a very good product. Of course, you will need new brake lines to accommodate the increased rise.

I have a Sargent (which is much better than any of the 3 Corbins I've owned) and I also have a helibar set that I haven't installed yet.
When you put your bars on, did you have to replace any cables or lines, or just go with creative routing?? I don't want to go into the VFR brake line tangle if I don't have to.

    Thanks!

I put Helibars on my 99 and I didn't have to replace any lines. You just have to move the throttle cable so that it doesn't stick. I believe there is a thread on here from a 6th gen that has a lot of great pictures that will help you install them.

I did Helibars and a custom seat, which is more of a mix between Corbin and Sargent seat.

The custom seat was made narrower and way way more comfortable. This meant that it shaved off 35mm off the seat height of the bike. This slightly lower seat / ride height coupled with the helibars worked very well for me. And I have periodic lower back issues.

I can't comment on the lower pegs, as I don't have them.

I like the idea of those adjustable type clip-ons, but I recall that they wouldn't be as wide as a Superbar. What is your mounted width from end to end?
