I'm wondering if there is a company that has a helmet cam that is remotely control like a handlebar control. What I'm looking for is something that's not too heavy and it doesn't need to be high quality like X Games type thing but I would like to be able to switch on the fly from video to just taking single pictures. I would prefer wireless, naturally but if that is not possible then wired would be ok. My thinking is that a big part of the enjoyment of a ride for me is taking pictures but I really hate having to stop to take pictures of all the neat things while you're riding.

I've seen these advertised at Fry's Electronics lately but I have no idea how good they are. They seem to have quite a few models that might be worth checking out.

Many of the new action cams now have wifi and apps for your smart phone.
If you have your phone mounted on the bike, you can use it to drive the camera and see what its recording.

I generally pack my camera out of sight because I can't really see the screen in the sunlight. Plus I generally like to keep my eye on the road. ;) I had a go pro for year and I liked it, but I just never knew whether I was recording or taking a pic or had it turned off. I'd like something that looks like that ION thing above, but with a small switch that has off/on, pic, and video buttons and that's it. That way when I'm cruising by something pretty cool, I just click the button and I get a pic, or if someone starts messing with me, I can click video and get them recorded. :)

Reg my friend bought one of those from China and he seem to like it. Not sure about quality. I have seen the picture and video from his footage and wasn't thrill.

I've got a Sony HDR-as15. It takes HD video, and if you put the video into windows you can pick single frames out of your video footage so they could be saved as jpegs and printed out later. This isn't specific to the Sony, as far as I know you can do this with any video. If you want to pick frames to print (or if you get a helmet cam to give you the functions you want) you still want the best resolution to give you good quality prints. If you went down this route, the camera takes say 30 frames per second so if you are picking one out of those, you should get a shot with no motion blur.

Yeah I have considered that also if I can't find something like I mentioned. I used to have a great Kodak that Wad good resolution that I could use in one hand and it was easily controllable but that kept getting smaller to where I can't handle really with gloves

PC Richard has the Polaroid XS80 on sale. Regular price I've seen elsewhere is 130, they got it for 100.

It comes with a helmet mount but not much else.

It vibrates when you press a button so you don't have to be looking at it. No idea if it's intuitive and it doesn't have a remote sorry.

I checked Consumer Reports and their most current review rates none of the cameras as having easy to use controls nor good audio quality.

As for this Polaroid model, it's gotten some good reviews. The xs100 did as well. Just steer clear of the one that looks like a gopro- reviews say it sucks.

Battery life and image quality/stabilization even in lower light rates pretty well and it's waterproof to 30'.

Just don't buy any extended service contracts with PC Richard. They have a horrible track record. If you really want one of those, bestbuy will price match and you can get the warranty there.

That MHD Action cam that OOTV found looks good, and a great price too. I found this the other day in Chapparels winter catalog, lots of features, programable remote, a curved mount that I assume is to mount it to a helmet. hard to tell how bulky it is and it's a bit pricey.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=899528&Q=&is=REG&A=details
Hope that link works. If not it's the Drift Ghost HD

You can control the GoPro with a remote pack... I think that might be the best alternative option?

I like that one, but man that is pricey!

I watched a review of top helmet cams the other day, too and none of them jump out at me. I have used the gopro quite a bit and the quality is pretty good, but I don't know if the remote makes it any easier to tell if I am recording or taking a pic. The problem I always had with it was I couldn't really see the LED in the daylight so I spent a lot of time riding up beside Tori and pointing at my cam and he'd give me a thumbs up if he could see the flashing light.

Maybe the new version with the remote has a flashing LED on the remote that let's you know it's recording?
