Sport Touring Tire Showdown - Poll

I'm running the PP3s on my '01 and I really like them, they feel solid and I have yet to get them to let me down. I like the turn in the front gives, so I put a PP3 on the front of my '09 and paired that with a PR2. So far I have about 2k miles on the '01 and they still look like new IMO. We'll see how long they last, I doubt they'll give me the 10k + I got out of my PR2s, but since my '01 is just for play and not commuting, I think it's a good compromise. The '09 is my commuter/tourer so that's why I stayed with the PR2 on the rear, I'm hoping the PP3 will last a good chunk of time of the PR2 rear, again we'll see. To add to this, I even threw on a set of PP3 on my Duc, but have yet to put many miles on them yet.

See post # 11. I was happy with their performance. I did some pretty aggressive riding September 2012 (by my standards anyways) and the 3's handled quite nicley. That ride finished them off for me though and I went back to the PR 2's only because they were cheaper. So ya, they hold up well.

Hi Randy, think you meant Pilot Road 3s like I had the same time as yourself ?

I've just fitted Pilot Power 3s, trouble with the Road 2 & 3s most of my riding these days is with friends on Superbikes like S1000rr HP4, GSXR1000K10 & 12, 954, ZX10-r and R1 etc shod with Sports/track tires. Being on a near stock 13.5 yro VFR on ST biased Pilot Road 2/3s is way too hard work when staying with them on long sections of 50 > 90kms of continually tight twisties ( like will be next week ) . Having Sports Road biased tires like the Rossos IIs or Power 3s makes it much easier therefore more fun and safer.

 

OK. Im bad. I will punish myslef by not getting any older for a week

 

I've got pilot power 2ct on the scooter and they are great. Done about 7000km and still going strong.
Incredible grip and very confidence inspiring even in the Grampians and along the (wet) great ocean road.

 

Good luck with that Randy I've been in denile for years, so far it hasn't helped. :wink:

Just got a new metzler m5 tire today and they look like they would stick like glue to road compared to the suky metzler oem 4's with 4500 miles on them-still good tread-but they don't stick to the road good at all-I think I would rather have a sticky tire that lasted 4500 miles then a sports touring tire that suked all the time but lasted real long-by the way I got a set of M5 for $160 with the free front tire deal and a reduced price rear tire-truly a great deal. The M5 tires would be somewhere inbetween sports and sports touring like the vfr is!

 

I have bought the bt023 twice now for my long trips mainly due to cost and they seem to last 10k plus. I wnated the new PR3 but saving 130.00 was worth it for me. Rode in good rain and winds with no problems.

 

I've been using the Metzeler Z8 for 6000k's.
They look like they'll do another 6000 easy.
Dry weather grip is excellent. They warm up very fast and are very predictable.
There is no sign of squaring off & tipping into corners like the Dunlop RoadSmarts I had when I bought it.
I don't know of wet weather performance as I have not been out in rain. (drought in Sydney)
I only use the bike on weekends on windy roads & don't commute at all.
I'm very happy with them.

 

I use the Metzeler Z8 on my 99er VFR for 5000 km. They look like they will run 5000 km more.
I´m pleased with them in all Situations, in Rain is the adhesion good, in warm waether conditionen did i use a bit less aipressure on the front tire and it runs good.

i´m happy with them , before i used the Z6 , they where also O.K .

First over night country trip away and found I quite liked the Pilot Power 3s.

Neutral turnin with good feel and excellent in cold, wet conditions but only negative found they have an nearly imperceptible vibration on some road surfaces which wasn't their with the Rosso IIs. Google search found some riders on the Blackbirds also reported this very slight vibration and concluded it is related the the weight of the BB spreading open the largish Power 3 rain channels...Perhaps ?

If truth be known actually found I missed the Rosso IIs a little as think the tires carcass was fractionally stiffer, probably just a preference thing as the Powers 3s did seem to have similarly Linear Turn In with a bit more mid corner feel so if they also last longer like they're supposed to will probably stick with them next change unless of course ROSSO IIIs come out.

 

We might have to update this soon as Michelin just announced the PR4 which will start selling in Jan 2014.

I put the pilot powers on in august when I bought my 94,the handle nice, have 9000 mi. on them now. Still not wore out. I guess ill try the pr3s or the new pr4s next spring.

 

I would go with any tire that gives you the front one for free like I got with the metzler m5 promotion-two tires-m5 $160-I wonder if they will run that deal again-maybe not? I have done this about three times now-irate:

 

I like the Dunlop Roadsmart IIs, but I am gonna try the Dunlop Q3s . I have the Dunlop Q2s on my R1 and love them.

 

I had the Dunlop Q2s on my Duc but I didn't get much mileage out of them, good gripping tire, but they didn't last more than 3K miles.

 

I run Roadsmart 2s. Plenty of grip for agressive Sport Riding. Got 8000mi. out of a rear 6000mi.out of a frint before cupping.
