Well after much research I pulled the trigger and bought an '04 VFR Asphalt Black yesterday. It's a beautiful bike, and I'm already compiling my goodies list. Almost bought a CBR600, but when I saw the VFR my it caught my eye. I hope to keep this bike a long time.

I heard something nutty that said you shoud use windex to clean a flat paint, dont know if its true or not...Safe riding ; )

Anybody have one in white asphalt? Colors are sometimes given some very odd names by some very odd people.. The theory is that by naming a color it evokes some emotional response or primal shit or something like that so folks will buy paint. Many times either not enough of same or too much of same. So if "Misty Pink Bubblegum" turns you on chances are ya may be a closet harleydood.

Any "wax" either real or acrylic is gonna change the look of a "flat" or low sheen paint. Most auto type paints if purchased at an auto paint supplier can have a flatting agent added to the base. These paints from the big boy paintmakers are tough. Windex has an alcohol fraction that should not harm a good quality auto paint or a factory finish. Best bet IMO is to just use a mild detergent made for washing cars and bikes unless the bike or car is really cruddy then use dish detergent. Nannocritters like bugs tend to stick better to lower sheen paints. A good removal solution is a slurry of bicarb and water applied with soft bristle brush.

Somebody will go gaga over Go Gone but that is a line and not a specific product. So be careful when using stuff like that. Sort of like Bondo. The original is still around and still great stuff but "Bondo" is a line of many products.

What about the waxes that are in most car was detergents? Would that not take away some of the matte look from this finish? You also bring up another product I used to use all the time but am not sure on the effect it may have on paint, and you seem to be the guru of paint. I used to use dish-washing liquid all the time and found it cleaned great. I mean, if it cleans my wife's greasy pots and pans, then it must clean the road crap that gathers on the bike. It that overly harsh for continuous use BB? I am thinking of going back to that because it is about 1/4 the price and leaves my hands soft as a baby's bum.

Glad that was brought up because mine is dusty, and needs a good cleaning... don't want to mess up the finish.
Also I have a couple of debts on the tank. Can be hidden by as tank cover, though. Tried to see if I could push them out, by it appears the tank has a double wall. Anyone know for sure?

Best bet in light of the questions is to stick with what you are using. As stated, the factory paints and those made by the big boys for automotive type applications are tough.

Using your wife's dish detergent will remove "wax" both the natural type and the acrylics. The major risk is probably in pissing off you wife and messing with her stuff instead of buying your own eh? I hope this does not somehow buttonhole me as a guru of marital bliss. If you nicked my shit I'd be on your ass in a NY minute too..

Basically, like many things the "strength" of a solution determines how effective that solution will be. For great gobs of crud including asphalt from fresh roadwork straight right out of the jug dish detergent is fine. It will remove the waxes and if you use your own , may even garner you some brownie points with your wife that you lost when she noticed you were nicking her stuff..

The big box stores in the automotive sections usually have the car wash products. Using them on a bike that has just come back from an Ironbutt ride or a trip to Sturgis (not in the back of truck) is OK and may take a little more elbow grease. Generally if one RTFM's they will find that they are using too much detergent. Too much will strip wax.

Really cruddy? Take it to a coin operated carwash.. Bikes are pretty darn water proof.. Carwash "wand" are the terminal end of a pressure washer. Best bet is to stand back when using one.

You might could amortize the cost of a more gentle wash product by selling off all those jackets you scored from those folks awhile back. ;)

Speaking of babybuns, they sort of go with crappy nappies in my hood..

I now return to the mountain from whence I came.. BRB..
