So i talked to my case worker today. Seems they are not rdy to ok a new throttle body setup without further testing. I was fine with that and told them i wouldn't be around till early next work due to work. She told me that though that is what the code is saying is wrong it could be something else causing the code like a errant wire or gosh who knows what.

Some big wig from Honda is due down to also help with the diag work on the bike from the sound of it.

Have to see how this plays out.

Keep us posted. I like to think that Honda wants our business.

My thoughts exactly - although I have my sights on the crosstourer - The idea of being hit with a colossal bill will make many of us think twice.

I don't know which is worse, the skill level, or the attitude of these so called techs. Nobody, in their right mind, would take that answer at face value and just swap the whole assembly out. It kind of makes you wonder about the genius that wrote the codes in the first place. Hopefully it won't take them too long to find the faulty $5 part and send you on your way.

    Good luck.

Might help a little if you casually mention that it is being discussed on the VFR World Forum. Mr Honda might think it a good idea to sort it out quickly

    Update :

Honda gave the dealership the ok to order a new fuse and throttle body. Got the call today from the dealership that did not fix the problem. So they ordered the ecm. Btw the fuse wasn't blown from my understanding. Honda NA just wanted it replaced.

I was given some theories on what is going on. When this is all over i'll see if i can talk to the tech again and get something a bit more detailed then what i have bouncing around in my head.

Bloody shotgun troubleshooting from the manufacturer is inexcusable. If I went to recover a broken aircraft and called back for parts, they are either the right ones or I'm looking for a new job tomorrow. I just don't think that they take their jobs seriously.

Based on what you described it was intermittent for a while and then fully failed kind of like a cold solder joint on an PC board which would be a manufacturing flaw. I'm interested to see what they throw at it next.

Very, very interesting. Especially since I've now witnessed similar beginings of your problem.
Both times it happened when I accelerated hard from around 75 or so and the Check Engine light came on.
Shortly afterwhich she just stalled as if the fuel was cut off. Both times she started back up with the Check Engine light cleared and I was on my way.
Hoping that 'gremlin' stays hidden forever....

Can't wait to hear what the fix is.

Another one ? Hmm - This topic is heading for 5 star importance rating.

I really hope the dealership with access to all the manufacturers resources, do manage to track down and fix the problem soon.

OK If it proves to be a 50 cent connector fine, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the 1200 is still a credible future upgrade path. If the fix really does entail ripping the brains out of the beast at x,000 dollars a go, then I fear Honda have the start of a PR disaster here.

Fingers crossed it all gets sorted - meantime keep those updates coming - many of us are watching

A good dealer would have already called the factory on your behalf.

That's absolutely wrong. Any dealer knows and will be happy to tell you that a call to the manufacturer's customer service line carries infinitely more weight when it comes from the customer rather than from the dealer. In fact, half the posts on this page show just how distorted consumer perceptions are of how things really work when it comes to something like this. You have no idea how many parts cannot actually be tested at the dealership level, other than to substitute a "known-good" part. Or how many things are only available from the manufacturer as an assembly for which there are no service parts available. Calling a one-off failure a potential PR disaster because another guy says his bike stalled and his check engine light came on also just makes you a keyboard warrior. Likewise for thinking that Honda will suddenly bend over and kiss anybody's derriere because you tell them we're talking about this on a forum. Sorry, but that's not how it works in the real world. And contrary to what a certain someone here will tell you, all dealers are not thieves and idiots. Nor are there any brainwashing sessions held by the management to turn all the employees into zombies who've had all their morals and scruples surgically removed. From everything I've read from the OP, it sounds like it's just a difficult diagnosis (sorry, but trouble codes don't tell the whole story) and the dealer and Honda are working to find a resolution for him. In a perfect world, every dealer would stock every part for every bike, diagnoses would be simple, cut and dried, and you'd get your bike back the same day...as we'd all love to. Unfortunately, that ain't how it works on this planet.

I am a dealer on the car side. If I have a customer that is not happy.... lets assume they have a great service history with me. The product fails...the warranty may be expired. I call the factory. My team has the technical background and the history to be able to connect the dots and make a case on behalf of the customer. I believe its a better case then " I am upset and am telling people on my forum". With respect...I have replaced entire vehicles without a call. In the end...its my customer. Mistakes happen...parts fail. I am not a fan of making the customer jump through further hoops to get looked after.

I'm also on the car side (30 years next month), and you're going to have a VERY hard time convincing me that you replaced an entire vehicle "without a call". Nobody replaces a whole car without it going to arbitration and the manufacturer *losing* said arbitration. Manufacturers would go bankrupt in a big hurry if dealers replaced cars because of warranty issues. And arbitration is a lot more hoop jumping than calling customer support. We want to take care of our customers as well. We will certainly stand up for the customer to the factory when it's appropriate. But I've never heard a car or motorcycle dealer who didn't believe a call from the customer *first*, goes farther than a first call from the dealer. And in case you'd lost track, I'm also the one who said telling the manufacturer they're being spoken badly about on an internet forum is just foolish and fruitless.

Ya got me brother. I'm lying again on the VFR forum.
It's called an asset substitution and the only call I make is to the lender to
Change serial numbers. After a few years and a few rodeos you know what you can and can't pull off on your customers behalf. I am grateful i rep a great product that does not requires many.

Apparently a Canadian thing, 'cuz that would never fly down here. Apparently you "Northerners" do things a lot different than we do down here in "the south". You have my apologies.

Good post! I am staying tuned as I like to hear happy endings hopefully. The more I hear about who-ha-whizz-bang gadget wizzardry, the more I feel like going the other direction.

I have a fond memory of an allen socket busting while working on one of them and busting/bleeding pretty good. AnywHooooo...

Thanks for the kudos Dave. Your use of absolutes is without peer. Ya might want to look up 'weasel words" though, just to temper the subjectivity a skosh. Congrats on not informing that you had an FJR with each and every post but the constant reminder that you have thirty years experience every darn time you want to talk tech is redundant.

What is ironic is that you dudes who work for or are dealers seem to be trying to convince that the dealers are the heroes and the customers are the bad guys.

    Update

    The good
So got a call from my case worker yesterday. Told me that the New ECM fixed the problem and the bike was running once again. The best news was that Honda was covering this under the warranty for the Emission control system. No out of pocket expensive for me !! Which is great since the bike is like 9 months out of the regular warranty.

    The bad
They have no idea what caused this in the first place. He warned me that if the ecm failed again and i had the buzz bomb on it. That the repair would be on me. I talked to the actually tech that did the work. He explained to me about the flow chart and how worthless it was in finding the root cause. I was happy with the honesty at least.

The only other drama surrounding the bike is the throttle body that was ordered. Since it was stuck on the bike and then removed Honda parts want take them back. I think that they might just stick them on the bike and warranty the old set also. No idea and just going to have to wait and see on that.

So right now the end result of this, Code saying bad Throttle bodies. Turn out to be fixed with new ecm.

That's great news. It seems they are doing their darndest to keep those 1200s on the road.

The failure could have been a failed component in the ECM that just set the error code, which cut your gas, which left you F.O.R.D. These things can just happen. Doesn't have to be anyone's fault. Unless you want to blame the engineer for not leaving you a limp mode option.

Well, time to get out riding again. Enjoy.
