I've heard that this might be a case-by-case issue as opposed to being a mass production issue. I have not really noticed it at all on my '07 and I've seen similar feedback from other VTEC owners as well.

The surge when vtec kicks in is not that much of an issue as some seem to think. it really just depends on where you have the throttle when it kicks in as to how much of a surge you may get. with very little throttle theres no real noticable surge just a sudden change in exhaust note if you shift the bike just right it can be a very smooth transition. it still would be intresting to ride a gen 6 and gen 5 back to back in the same conditions to see if the vtec has any real advantages :bolt:

No I ride by myself she drives her Charger HEMI, so were both happy.
But I to would love to ride a 5th Gen and 6th Gen back to back, just to see how different it would be.

    Hi Bob,

a good question you ask here ;-) let me give you my personnal feeling.
I've always been in love with the RC46 model design but before I bought my bike, I deceided to test the v-tech. Indeed, the 8 / 16 valve system provides a significant better low revs torque, but I do consider this new generation is more sportier than our model. The protection from the factory windscreen is not fantastic at all, at least for a rider of my size (I'm 1m69 tall) and the overall comfort is more sport orientated.

But anyway the V-Tec gen remains a fantastic one, and the best advice would be to test it and feel the difference with your current 99 model. I you like the v-tech one, go for it! If you feel you'd prefer to carry on with the feeling of your current one, just get it to the service. Before a vfr brakes down, you'd have to ride for thousands and thousands and thousands of miles, although you're a barbarian with the engine, if that!
Perhaps your wife does prefer the design from the v-tec one as well, what about her point of view here? ;-)

Good ride from a little Frenchy boy

I wonder what dealer's charge to flush and fill the coolant, brake and clutch systems and install new brake pads usually costs? $700 does sound like a lot but working on that linked brake system must be time consuming...I'd like to see a checklist of all the items included in that service.

I'm coming off a 5th Gen and have to say that I love the VTEC. It is noticeable, but not overwhelming. In addition, don't forget that the VFR is Honda's technology flagship. If Honda is going to do something "different", then you know that this is the bike that will see it.

There is a real future with VTEC, not only since Honda runs it in many of their cars, but also in order to meet emission standards. It certainly serves a purpose for the present day requirements.

If you're going to spring for a new bike, get the RWB! It's bound to hold it's value better than any other 6Gen. I love the V-Tec. That little extra kick is great! And the RWB always attracts a crowd. As far as the old one...Keep it.
Everybody needs at least 2 bikes.

Well ? Did you Keep the 5th gen or buy the 6th gen? I hope you kept the 5th gen myself .. Someone responded saying since vtec was also in cars and the new emissions laws for 2008 is why Honda introduced it in the VFR in 2002.

Why then is there no other motorcycle companies following suit?Maybe because Vtec dont really work that great. Vtec and the loss of gear driven cams was a bad decision by Honda in my opinion.

Actually, BMW does have a similar type of system called "innovative Valvetronic system" that they have developed for their cars. I am not sure if it is implmented in any of their motorcycles though. In addition, I know that Honda has patents on VTEC and I would guess that the same goes for BMW. You will probably see more and more of this type of R&D down the road.

man i have to jump in here...i have a 98 with a Devil system exhaust..
corbin seat and some cool honda racing stickers..you know the Woody wood pecker decals? i absolutely love this bike. i had a 99 748 Ducati andthat was the only other bike i could compare it. overall the Honda was the winner...don't get me wrong the Duc was a blast to ride and it looked like no other.....yellow..so much carbon fibre..the sound..oh yes the sound. it was a toss up but in the end the Honda won. i had to spend 1200.00 on the Duc for the 12000 mile maintenance. it needed 3 ..can't think of what it was...in the valve train...about 3hunert a piece...plus all the other "things that could go wrong checks" i rode it for the last time the day i sold it to my friend..lots of twisties..man i didn't want to sell it..but after getting back on the 98vfr no sweat. keep the 98 my man..it's a great bike...but it's not a Ducati..waht can i say?

I went from a 99 to an 06 as well and I don't regret it a bit. Vtec is a non issue for me, I think it looks better and handles better. I love the factory hard bags, and underseat exhaust. If money were no object I would have 1 VFR of every size and gen, but I would not go back to a 5th.

So Bobby...did you sell your body & bike? did you get the 6th Gen? Did you ever return to talk to the Freak in the Fun bike center?

I can't believe there is actually a Freak'in Fun Bike Center that is no frick'in fun.... especially in sunny San Diego. :caked:

    Keep the one you've got

Couriers in London get more than 100 000 miles on VFRS. Magazine consistently say that the pre-Vtech models are best. A Micron can, Power Commander, higher windscreen (unless you don't need it). I put Oxford heated hand-grips as well.

The cam-gear train is great. Put a headlight modulator on for safety, I have blue LEDs that glow on the front mudguard and rear tyre at night. A lazer jammer/detector and Ventura luggage system.

These are what I spent my money on rather than a new bike which will not realloy improve my life much.

I am ready to consider the 2008 replacement if they can do something really impressive.

Dude, you've already got an impressive bike. And it sounds like you're making it better. So don't contradict yourself.
