Should I or shouldn't I?

I have a red 1999 VFR800fi, I want to put a new Micron on it (for the sound) and it needs a $700 service, I love it nothing wrong with it except it's 7 years old. The wife has given me the go ahead to buy a black 2006 V-TEC, but Im torn between the love of the bike I've had for the last 5 years and the thrill of a new bike.
What should I do?

 

tell your wife you need two bikes, and when she ask why. tell her "I have two balls, don't I. okay, that might not work but it is worth the laugh! why do you need to get rid of the 99? you have not payments, and insurance might not be all that much more with the second bike.

 

$700 service? what type of service are you talking about? My 99VFR 23,000 miles and climbing,,Last valve check cost was only $117 since all valves were in spec..If any shims /parts would have been needed the total cost would have been $238 and thats at a Honda dealership...

 

And then make a track bike out of the 99 ....

Keep the 99, the 6th gen isn't worth the payments and insurence jump. It will cost you less to do whatever you want to your bike than to purchase a new one. Plus you give up gear-driven cams, a more compact bike, and power for v-tech and hardbags. The under the seat exhaust is more of a irritant if you ask me. None of the aftermarket systems look just right. Blame Honda for making crooked pipes. But a high-rise Micron on a 99, bitchin!

Thanks for the good input, I think I will go and have a test ride, I need to find out what all this V-TEC nonsense is all about, As for the $700 service that's a 16,000 mile service from the Fun Bike Center in California. Not forgetting a $75-$150 if they have to adjust the valves.

 

I've ridden both. The 5th Gen is a better bike than the 6th Gen. Just my opinion so take it for what its worth. Do the service yourself. There's nothing like the satisfaction that comes from knowing you F'd something up real good all by yourself.:biggrin:

Well called the Fun bike center to let them know I would be in one hour for a test ride. I got there to find the bike still sitting in the same spot not ready the sales man asked me which bike it was again that I had come to see and then walked past the only VFR they had on the floor(he really knew his bikes) He pushed it to the door and looked at me as if to say "go on then", 10 awkward seconds past and he said "O you need the key don't you". Then back to the sales desk he went and lots of muttering took place, I went to investigate only to find out the bikes not ready it would take another 1 1/2
hours to get ready. At this point I turned to walk out when the sales manager said "if you would had called we could have got it ready for you".
I think I am going to test ride it if for no other reason than for them to waste time getting it ready, but I think they convinced me to do my own service and wait for the 2008 model maybe the valve change wont be so abrupt.

 

Why buy another when you're pleased with your current bike? why spend the money on a bike that you don't know if you'd like as much as your current one?

I heard that the older gen and the new gen get the same power I saw some dyno tests on line. the older gen sounds so good with shorty on it:biggrin: and that cam gear:biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin: I say, if you have this bike now dont get the new one for a while. You will save money, a lot of money and your wife will see that you are being a good little boy:wink: then you can set her up for the next toy:biggrin: :biggrin:

I love my 6th gen, thing looks sick, vtech is bitchin, and under-seat exhaust IMO is the coolest thing since beer-dispensing-hats.
700 dollar service is rediculous, but remember, thats what youll be paying in sales tax on that new bike (or almost).
It comes down to if you want something new or not. The black of the 2006 has a bit of metal flake in it, looks awesome. I never had the pleaseure of gear driven cams, but I dont have any gripes about mine, so maybe its a good thing!

I had to ride bitch on a 6gen, exhaust was uncomfortably Warm at stops and wrong air currents. Does the wife ride bitch???

 

At least you know dealer is not going to give ya any pressure to buy
why not try again for a test drive maybe from another dealer, just to satisfy your urge for a new bike. that way youll know for sure if you should wait for the next gen in 08 after all you still have a good ride maybe not as a gen 6:biggrin: you gotta love those gen 5 huggers:tongue:

 

I'm coming off a 5th Gen ('99 that I bought new) and now ride a 6th Gen ('07 RWB). It is worth the upgrade in every way. The bike is more refined. When the 7th Gen comes out, I'm sure it will continue the tradition and I will be in line to buy that one as well.

 

I want to wait and see if the next VFR gen has resolved the abrupt VTEC issues. Or else I am gonna finish the work i want to do on my 5th Gen VFR and then find a 4th Gen bike to do a rebuild and use the bike on the 4th gen rebuild bike on the track. I have a problem with paying Honda for a new bike so I can spend more money for a power commander for a brand new bike to resolve VTEC issues that Honda needs to fix. That is just the way I feel about Honda.
