I bought the bike earlier this year. 1985 VF700 Interceptor. It's my first bike, 28.5k miles. I'm going through doing maintenance with a coworker and was hoping someone here with more experience/knowledge could comment on the status of my cams. I've heard of the issues these motors have but haven't been able to find many pictures of what bad ones look like. Compression is 175-180psi on all four cylinders and that was before checking/adjusting valves (which were close to specs). Spark plugs looked great, no pics of that. We're pretty confident the motor is healthy, I just wanted some experienced opinions. Thanks!

First three are of the rear (missing one pic), rest are the front:

Of course, pics of the bike the day I took it home. The paint looks better in these pics than in reality:

Cam lobes are fine although i see some bearing wear (scoring/discoloration) in the 7th photo down. Probably a result of dry starts after oil changes.

They look very good to me. Consider yourself lucky cos the VF750 (and I assume VF700) was the first and probably most severely affected VF engine for cam wear, (possibly just due to it being the first). It must have had kind and understanding owners in its life. BTW, your compression test results are very good. Sounds like you have a well looked afeter engine there.

Ah ok. I saw some of that in the first pic as well and was wondering what it might be. Thanks!

Great to hear! Yes, I'm pretty happy with the condition of the engine and consider this a good find. Thanks!

I still have the front tire to change, the fork seals need replacing, and other little things like the mirrors and turn signals need some attention.

Can't wait to get it on the road again!
