That ride from Chico to Seattle on the mach 1 91 took me less than two hours. Now what would be interesting is to see all those mountain passes and ventures into Portland on a map in case the wimpy and obese dudes on their cruisers want to add that ride to Ironbutt.

An epic ride like that I would think would be harder on the butt than the back.

The secret that is little mentioned on the Ironbutt site are the gas stops that have Jo-jo's, a source of energy and sustenance.

One search term you can probably leave out is " stock seat"

Lol! The bike is completely stock, except for lowered pegs & a set of Gen mar risers. I think I'll be cruisin' eBay this winter... I don't find it all that bad up to about 500 miles but after that, well, I think the "Geneva Conventions of war" have a paragraph regarding Honda seats...

As some mentioned, I did an Iron Butt a couple years ago. Their entry level Saddlesore 1000. 1000 miles in 24 hours or less. My group and I did 1020 miles in 17.5 hours. It was actually fairly easy on the VFR. Here is a link to a blog I contributed to... About my Iron Butt experience. It is 3 parts with a link to the next part at the end of each section. Maybe it will help answer some questions you have. Good luck if you do it!

I was hoping there would be talk of modding the VFR for an Ironbutt or just long distance cruising.

    Any suggestions? I'm thinking:

    taller windscreen
    taller handlebars
    maybe taller gearing?
    Quiet exhaust?

My 86 seems more sport than touring.

At that moment, when you accept the fact that there is no fixed reality, no hard and fast set of rules that need to be followed, no limits or borders, you are making the choice to be free --Garri Garripol and la chica.

The fixed reality is that modding out an 86 for Ironbutt is going to be a real hunting experience. High bars and windshields are out there somewhere. Taller gearing will be fairly easy to accomplish. Unless you really have an iron butt, that seat looks like it might be just a tad uncomfortable after twelve hours or so. Monkey butt is just around the next corner.

For visuals of mods on several types of bikes, see Google Images. Some of the really serious dudes have mods like UCDs. NASAspeak for Urine Control Device.

I hear these can be purchased at any HD Botique. They are all marked "LARGE" . IMO this may be an exaggeration.

I think that is all personal preference. The only mod I did for comfort was the Sargent seat. My 07 is perfect for long distance as is... As for exhaust, right before my Iron Butt ride I picked up some Staintunes at a good price and had it custom mapped. It didn't make it louder or quieter but it sure was smoother. I say, if you think the mods you mentioned would help you, go for it!! :)

I just did an SS1k ride from Marshall, IL to Silverthorne, CO in June on my 7th Gen, with a good friend riding his Heritage Softail. 30mm peg lowers, Heli-Bars and an Airhawk cushion on the stock seat made the bike absolutely perfect (I'm 6'2" 225#). Bike ran beautifully, but we encountered 103 degree temps in central Kansas. That was hot. Went north to Cheyenne and back across Nebraska to get home. Left EARLY Monday morning, home Wednesday night. 1050 miles on day 1, approximately 650 on day 2, and over 750 on day three. We almost went for the 1500 mile/36 hour ride, but we spent a little time lingering in the mountains on the morning of day 2, so we wouldn't have made it.
    I love the VFR12.
