So, I was all set to make the attempt on my last bike, and then I bought a 6th gen VFR .
Has anybody done it? I'm sure it can be done (I'm not questioning that).
    Preparations? Me? The bike?

Should I get a phsyc evaluation?

    Just wondering...

I know Chicky had done it. Randy is that kind of a savage as well but not sure if he has done it officially.

I too have often thought about it but to my shame I have never acted on those thoughts. However, I have done a few long hauls on the viffer and found it to more than up to almost anything.

I know Chickie has done a couple officially. I may have done it too but not recorded. I tried the Canada to Mexico in 24 hours in 2012 but did not make it. I only made it as far as Sacramento. I think I could have done it except for disc issues in the neck which I was treating the wrong way. The task will be re-tried.

Just make sure your bike is in good running order and you are well rested up. Any stops for fuel should also include a walk around the gas bar and some stretching of the ham strings. If is is going to be a really long one, caffeine tablets do work. I was able to ride from Atascadero California, back to Chilliwack, BC in give or take, 24 hours. I had two approx 1 hour naps on the bike during the trip back home.

Is an iron butt 500 or 1k miles? Best I've done is 600 miles in one day (actually 2 days in a row). 3200 miles in 7 days is the best I've done on my 7th gen VFR.

There are quite a few different Iron Butts you can go for. Too many to get into here without me doing what you can do for yourself. Google "Iron Butt" and you will find something.

I vaguely recall some Colorado HSTA members completing Iron Butt challenges on VFRs.
But that was at least 12 years ago so my memory may be hazy.

Nearly did one, Boynton Beach Florida to Oak Hill West Virginia.

Would have finished it but I found a room for dirt cheap.

What you are looking for is www.irobuttrally.com. This is the official site. Many have jumped on the Ironbutt wagon to ride piggyback. Mostly harleydoods IMO.. ;)

The real deal has been running since 1984.

One guy I know well who rides the real deal is Rich O'Connor of Rich's Seats near Seattle.

A medical is probably a good idea since most here are old farts who are really 20 years older than they say...

A cruise of the official site will possibly land you whether or not a VFR has done a real Ironbutt. One search term you can probably leave out is " stock seat" . Also see various blogs on the subject with stories about the various bikes that finished.

Lots of pix on Google Images of Ironbutt type bikes. Probably some kinky stuff too having to do with butts in general.

I did it in 1984 on my VF750F before the Iron Butt came out. Same year though. Penton had a 24hr Poker Run. Took us 19hrs to Knoxville TN and back to Lorain Oh.

Try what this guy has done. He's got to have an Iron Butt for sure. Check out the other adjutants credentials.

[h=4]Profile: Iron Butt Association President, Michael Kneebone[/h] Although Michael Kneebone is the President of the Iron Butt Association, he is probably best known as a Contributing Editor of Motorcycle Consumer News. Michael's articles on long distance endurance riding have also appeared in Motorcyclist. Michael's long-distance credentials include being the first person to break the 60 hour barrier in the coveted New York to San Francisco Guinness World Record, crushing the long-standing 64 hour motorcycle record with a time of 47 hours and 41 minutes; setting the 24 hour endurance record of 1,704 miles in 24 hours; breaking the 50,000 miles in 6 month barrier for the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America mileage contest; and being the first finisher of the 50cc Quest (cross-country in 50 hours or less). He set the 48 state record time of 6 days, 13 hours and 22 minutes with riding legend Fran Crane in 1986. His punishing road tests (imagine riding a motorcycle 10 miles down a set of railroad ties to test suspension, or riding 21,000 miles in five weeks to give a new engine a workout) have inspired two BMW ads.
Michael has completed two Iron Butt Rallys, been Rallymaster of two others and was the Chairman of the 1995 and 1997 events.

I dunno what an ironbutt is, since the only people that care about it ride cruisers with backrests, floorboards, and highway bars, and anyone that can't ride *that* for 1k miles a day is a sissy or obese. As far as my VFR, I did 1200 miles in one day once. Went from Chico to Seattle via 101 with two passes over the mountains between 101 and I-5. I was 28 at the time and my back was messed up for days afterward.

That is an epic ride my friend!
Google maps says that the distance between Chi town and Seattle is 2064 miles or 30 hours of driving so I think you are selling your self short at 1200 miles!

Derf? Chico, CA (my hometown) is 70 miles north of Sacramento. On the slab, its about 670 miles I think from Chico to Seattle. via 101, I have no idea. Probably 800 miles if you cut back over to Portland instead of taking 104? If you go across the mountains an extra two times however, it's a loooooong ride.

Oh man I was thinking Chi town not Chico but I guess that Hwy 101 was the give away. That is why I would fail bad on the rally and therefore should just stay home.

Definitely not in the twisties. Some of the straight stretches are good though. I do have a throttle lock.

Nope. Pulled over somewhere safe, bike up on center stand, helmet on tank, gloves on helmet and head on gloves. Legs hanging down the sides and I have slept like that for a couple hours once.
