Attached are pictures on an air box mod I did this spring. I removed the flapper valve and snorkel. An then opened up the intake area. I used a piece of sheet aluminum, pop rivets and then some flat black heat paint to finish it off. See pictures below. The first three pics are the stock air box. The last pic is back in the bike.

The only improvement is in the sound. I ran the bike for a year without the flapper and the snorkel. The bike had a deep growl - almost echo like. I think the flapper and snorkel removal created a hollow chamber which caused a resonance. Now that the chamber has been opened up - that growl is gone. Not terribly scientific - especially coming from a mechanical engineer - but that is the only noticeable difference.

Hey another ME! Cool!!! I've got 9 classes left. You mind if I ask what it is that you're doing with your degree? I need to start looking into internships and jobs, but I am having a hard time finding anything interesting.

I think people just show up for the pictures. Reading is asking a lot.

9 classes left for your Mechanical Engineering degree (BSME) - so about 1 more year. That is wonderful. I did two internships prior to graduation. Then after graduation , I started out working as an energy engineer and continue to work in the energy field but have moved up into senior management as a project developer / engineer. Definitely a profession that is in demand - we just don't produce enough engineers in the USA to meet our employment demands. So good luck. It is a wonderful profession and has served me well for the last 25 years.

At UCF there are three different routes for mechanical engineers. Energy systems, mechanical systems or materials systems. I found Thermo-dynamics pretty challenging and most of my materials oriented classes pretty interesting, so I am going to do the material systems option. I still have to worry about Heat-transfer, but after that it should be smooth sailing. My hat's off to you for being in the energy field, that is some really complex stuff. Some how I would like to find something performance or racing oriented to do with my degree, but I have had no luck so far.
