You shouldn't feed wild animals of any sort any time.

 

Damn, all this time I thought birds came from eggs, not seeds. So poisonous birds grew up to attack the villagers? I would sue too.

Jesus that is seriously messed up stuff. They need to identify the responsible middle managers and lock them up. I say middle managers as the really good upper managers always find a way to ensure that they can claim ignorance. It would be nice to see some big guys take the fall here as fines just don't cut the mustard when you fuck up the environment like these guys have admitted to.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company was sentenced to pay a $4 million fine and perform community service for eleven criminal violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). In a separate civil agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scotts will pay more than $6 million in penalties and spend $2 million on environmental projects under a settlement that resolves additional civil pesticide violations.

Fiscal 2012 net sales increased 1 percent to $2.83 billion, compared to $2.80 billion a year ago. Global Consumer sales were flat at $2.5 billion for the year.


Seems about right for maybe killing a few hundred thousand song birds. The penalty is the equivalent to a few seeds of sales.

I dunno. Scott's fucked up here for sure but just where do you draw the line? Don't shoot the birds but spray the shit out of your crops for grasshoppers and plant eating grubs. Spread crap on standing water for mosquito larvae. Hell, hunters used lead shot for how many decades, knowing that the pellets settling at the bottom of the ponds were being eaten by the waterfowl, which in turn were dying from extreme lead poisoning. At least we finally changes that.
