So I got bored waiting for Delkevic to ship hi-level link pipe to the UK & was not overly keen on it's angles. I have NOT been able to find one for a reasonable price, so decided to see if I could DiY it :)

First up, I pulled the low level exhaust & played with the link pipe & silencer to see what I could do. Low & behold, it looked like a short 45 degree bend was all that was required to get the silencer where I wanted it & link the header to the existing link pipe redeployed !
So went to a local car custom exhaust centre & had them make me a 45degree bend pipe, the distance between the straights on the inside of the bend was 67mm for my setup.

I used the old stainless lower link clamp to clamp the new bend to the existing link pipe & used a new one to connect the 45 bend to the headers. Then I used a spare piece of 2mm steel strip to make a hanger that went between the right passenger foot peg front bolt & the subframe, plus another 2mm spring washer & a stainless washer, then used 2 x 2mm spring washers & a stainless washer on the rear bolt to even them up & to create an additional 5mm of space so the silencer could fit where I wanted it. I replaced the right passenger footpeg bolts with 5mm longer stainless cap head bolts that I had in my SS bolt bucket.

The hanger connects to the end of the link pipe & the silencer via the silencers band clamp, I used an extra nut to fill the space & a nylock nut on the end to make sure it does not vibrate off. The can is secured by a bracket added to the rear subframe, this is just a steady & I riveted a mating bracket to the can & they connect by a 5mm SS bolt as per the pic. I had to trim some of the inner black plastic under tray to alloy the hanger to get the right angle. But it all bolts up solid :)

I was going to use the old centre stand bump stop to mount a heat shield for my boot, which is why it appears in some of the pics, but decided to ditch that & used a piece of alloy U section & a thins stainless band to clamp the temporary heat shield in place.

So here's a set of pics showing how it turned out.

Looks great. Can't say I'm a fan of the can mount though.

There are several aftermarket heel guards available that connect with clamps.

    Nice to see your innovations.

However, I am curious about Delkevic not getting you your link pipe. I have had fantastic customer service from them here in the U.S., and mine seems to have mounted up pretty well.

The angle is not as accurate as your custom job, but for about $140 for the link pipe and muffler, I am very happy.

I spoke to them when I saw the first thread on here about them being available in the US circa November last year. They expected UK stock by February & it never arrived, still no UK stock.
The customer service is fine, but they can't ship what they don't have !

Yours looks good but I wanted one that followed the line of the bodywork !

Yeah, I know that the pipe could follow the fender line more closely. However, it fits even with my hard luggage rack installed.

By the way, what kind of a rear wheel is that? Definitely not stock. Is the swingarm stock?

I think Delkevic has some quality control issues with their high-mount pipes, or they've been tweaking the angles. Mine sweeps up a little relative to the line of the rear cowl, and definitely sticks out some. I've been meaning to go get it bent back correctly, but haven't had the time. Also, what do you do about properly bracing the centerstand? The built-in centerstand puck on my link pipe holds it further up than the stock pipe, and my chain will hit the CS if it's loose at all.

Looks good but it's not the most impressive thing in the photo, I'm more interested in the rear hub and what you had to do to get it? :))

Thanks for comments guys, for those interested in the rear wheel, check out my 10 year refresh Part Deux thread.

But a brief summary, is a BST RC45 5.75" Carbon rear wheel to go with the front one. The rear swingarm is standard. The rear axle & brake disc/caliper/hanger are all VFR400, its uses the same bearing sizes as the 800, but needs 2mm shaved off the face that sits on the left bearings to get the wheel allignment right. The rear sprocket can be a VFR/RVF carrier mounted back to front to get the chain allignment, or you can copy my custom made one based on VFR base with Ducati QC carrier.

The wheels improve the handling massively, its like night & day, more like a CBR600 now than a VFR.

    Have fun :)

that looks nice. i was gonna go with the delkevic for my 5th-gen, because of the bang/buck thing. every install i saw with their mid-pipe looked slightly strangely angled to me. not awful, but just not quite what i thought should be the correct angle. looks like the OP solved the issue.

i found my solution when a 5th came into our stock that i was able to liberate the staintune from.

The angle on the Delkevic will never be as good as Mowhak's, which is excellent. But from original photos I have seen from early high rise pipes from Delkevic, I do think they have improved the angle. I did have enough play to improve it, but for a whole system that costs the same as a Hindle high rise mid-pipe alone, I am happy.

    Love that rear wheel Mowhak.

    Great work Mohawk!
I'm a "Staintune Guy" but your pipe setup seems to be very well done.
You seem to have a very special bike and I'm sure we would all like to see some pictures of the stuff you've done.

Just use the next/back buttons to navigate through. These are all before the hi-level can & leather seat cover, I'll try to add some pics of how it looks now later.

I had a lovely 70mile trip to work on her & the exhaust is fully bedded in & no leaks, everything is rock solid on the mountings etc I'm happy :)

    Enjoy

Here's a full pic. It's had the hi-level pipe fitted & the coloured leather seat cover my partners (adult) kids bought me for my birthday :) They are available on the bay, makes the seat much more grippy if wearing textile trousers !

    Enjoy.
