I actually just picked up the set of pipes I have been wanting to use; stock mufflers from an 06 R1. They're oval so don't take up as much horizontal room as some other pipes and have a tapered slanted cap I like. The plan is to cut them down a couple inches, swap the inlet cap and rerebaffle them. After a coat of black they'll look the part and should fit nicely with the theme of the bike. I'll get some pics up soon.

The flex pipe was plenty rigid and the heat wrap stiffened after use so the whole set up was not wobbly or fragile in the slightest. I did still use a bracket for the tip though. I think the whole set up cost me maybe $50 ($15 for both flex pipes, $15 for both tips, $6 for baffles and $12 for wrap).

I suggest just using whatever fairing you like as none will be DOT approved. If you live in a place that you're likely to get harassed then the build in general is probably a bad idea. I figure that the cops have target zones where bikers act like fools; stay out of the target zones and you likely won't be bothered.

I don't have any pics yet but I just used a simple plastic LED bezel you can get at radioshack for a few dollars in a pack with maybe 4 in them. The bezel is pushed in from the bottom of the cap and the LED from the top. It's very snug. The wiring, resistor and such will then be covered with shrink tubing and run just behind the coolant hoses or frame so that you don't see it. I will seal the LED all around with silicone just to be sure that the coolant doesn't splash out.

Ha! I hope the effect is something like that. :0)

Here's a couple pictures of the R1 exhaust I will be putting on the bike. I have a lot of work to do to them before they are ready like grind off all tabs, shorten them about 4 inches, paint them, flip the inlet cap, rebaffle them and cut off/reweld on new piping.

They're just held on with tape here for mock up. The rough location is right just to get an idea. When shortened I want them to line up with where I cut the frame, about where the previous pipes ended.

    thor294 - Thanks

So I got some more work done today. I did some more fiberglassing of the tail. Had to redo the mounting system for the undertail and I think I got it right this time.

I also cut up one of the exhaust cans. I have a lot of clean up work to do but I think I did well considering it was the first time I've ever mutilated a sportbike muffler.

Drilled out the rivets of the exhaust and inlet caps.

Finally got the baffle out. Here you can see my line for cutting. I aim to shorten each one by 4 1/4 inches I believe it was.

I cut the baffle in half and plan to reuse the back half, rewrap it and it should sound pretty nice. The race baffle kits are just 2" holey pipe with new packing. This will create a chamber that is essentially a straight-ish pipe but still causes the exhaust to "find" it's way out so it shouldn't be as loud. I can always just re do it later as well.

Here is what it looks like now. I realized that I didn't even have to flip the inlet cap as all I have to do it flip the exhaust cap and baffle. Oh well; less drilling for the next one. I broke my grinder so I couldn't finish grinding welds off. I think it will work out great blacked out.

I had planned to work on the bike more today but it's just too windy today and I only like working in the garage with the garage door open. I suppose it's more of an excuse than anything really.

Anyway, I did mock up the exhaust with tape quick to see how it looks now. This pipe is actually meant for the left side, not the right as pictured, hence the bracket sticking out.

Undertail is finally held to the bike without the aide of tape. Now I have to trim, sand, sand some more, possibly insert a brake light I have for it, sand more and then paint.

I kind of want to cut it even shorter but I think I better slow down. It is still more of an eyesore than I want it to be but I think it will blend much better when it's all black.

Did you get the R1 cans cheap or free? Just seem a bit big overall, but noice job with the rework.

Thanks by the way. I'm definitely a cheapskate and a corner cutter so when anything I do is even passable as "nice" I'm a happy camper.

The R1 mufflers i got for about $20, which is roughly $50 cheaper than they usually go for on eBay, before shipping. They have the look I dig for sport cans, which I usually don't like being a cafe racer megaphone fan.

Anyway, any other interesting option would cost roughly $100 or more and I would still be doing just as much work to make the cheap, chinese pipes fit. There are just no aftermarket options I like for the vf750f so I'm stuck rigging it up myself.

I wonder though, has anyone done anything interesting exhaust-wise with a first gen? I received more messages about my ghetto exhaust than anything else, which makes me think people are dying for a little change.

So today I ground down most of the tabs on the first muffler with my new grinder. I also shortened the other muffler, cut the baffle down, removed tabs and some other junk. I may try to mount them this weekend. I will probably just hide the piping mess I make with exhaust wrap. :)

    Bump!

    We need updates!

What did you do with the crankcase oil separator?

You and me both. You would think that as a teacher I would have a lot of free time during the summer to get this bike finished but I've found that I fill my free time up quickly with lots of other projects and other junk. Since my last post I bought another 6 motorcycles, fixed two up quick and sold them but I'm still working on the other 4 as well.

Anyway, I have at least messed with the interceptor a little bit. I finally made the caps for the reservoirs, sealed them and gave them a coat of satin black. I still need to put the LEDs in but since I will seal them with silicone, I first wanted to work out how I will run the wiring before doing that.

I also spot welded (terribly since I didn't clean it first) both exhaust pipes together, for the most part. I have a couple more spot welds to do before I pull them off, weld them "correctly" and then wrap. My motivation has been really low lately and I'm still not in love with them as is. I recycled some old car piping I had lying around but without the correct bends it just looks awkward. Wrap and satin black should blend it all though so I'm hanging in there.

Here is a picture of my solution to the crankcase breathers. I would prefer to have some negative pressure but this will likely work out just fine. I had to nudge the bottom tube out a little so I could fit the filter on. The top filter I was keeping up, under the tank but I also like it hanging out the side like the lower one. Each filter was about $3 on ebay, shipped to my door. You'll have to forgive the photos; space is tight in my garage now with two vehicles, many motorcycles and other junk.

Thanks for the pic. How does it sound? It sure is a cute little fella and could be tucked in various ways for different looks. I'm assuming you have one on each side? Dual exhaust always looks great from the back.

Bringing this one back up as after reading the thread im curious about how it turned out.

First of nice job on the work you've done and documented.

Im curious how the bike runs with the pod filters on the carbs and what have you done to make it run right with them?

Thanks and hopefully we will see a update
