Will the exhaust for the vfr800FI be compatible with the vfr800's? i'm a noob with bikes, just bought one 3 months ago and i'm loving every minute of it. I'm also going to get some maintenance done on it, what should I ask the mechanic to do? fluid flushes, oil change, check the chain? How much does all this cost do you guys think? I'm on a limited budget, sequester kind of messed me over since i work on an Air Force base (I'm not only working 4 days instead of 5 :frown:).

What's the best exhaust system I can get for about 350?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

First of all, Welcome to The World! I'm sure you'll like it here. With that out of the way, it might help if you add which bike you have to your profile so we know which bike you have. It also might help to list your city/state as there may be members here that might be able to help you with service as most dealers can start to add up and most of the work can be done yourself (or with help) if you any bit of mechanical aptitude.

VFR's can be categorized in Generations:
    1983-1985 = 1st gen
    1986-1989 = 2nd gen
    1990-1993 = 3rd gen
    1994-1997 = 4th gen
    1998-2001 = 5th gen (VFR800)
    2002-2009 = 6th gen (VFR800)
    2010-??? = 7th gen (VFR1200 in the USA)

So depending on which generation you have will tell you which exhaust will fit. There are many to choose from and which one is best is subjective. Everyone will have their opinion, however quality is typically not as subjective as some products are made better than others, but you can get a lemon in any make/model. Two Bros, Leo Vince, Micron, D&D, all seem to be well made, but if you want one of these for $350, for the most part you'll usually have to scan eBay or have a connection with a retailer. Depending on where you see it written, the VFR800FI vs. VFR800 is probably interchangeable, the FI stands for Fuel Injection and came on the 1998 and above models.

As far as what to service, if this is a used bike, which it sounds like it is, I would have them flush/fill ALL of the fluids, check the chain/sprockets, brakes, the battery/wiring/charging system as some VFR generations are known to have electrical issues.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Seems like all the motorcycle communities are like one big happy family! :)

For a little bit of info I live in Las Vegas, NV. I have a 2002 VFR800. And I know/do basic maintenance on my car. As much as I would LOOOVE to have a Two Bros exhaust, it's way out of my price range :(

I got lucky, the used '09 I bought came with a Two Bros setup! I have an '01 that I'm looking at updating and although the jury is still out on the quality from what I have been reading but the Delkevic (coincidentally that CR mentions) is an option I might be looking at for my '01.

As far as riders in your area, there are few and some may be able to help you with service needs, but they'll have to volunteer to help you or you can reach out to them. I found that other than the 16k/32k valve checks, which some owners seem to skip or delay, the maintenance on these bikes is pretty easy to do yourself. I just recently did a once over on my new to me '01 and other than paying for the parts, I'm not paying anything for labor, except my "free time".

    Cheers

Welcome aboard and congrats on the new ride.

I'm one of those guys that can't/doesn't do much of his own work. When I bought my bike from the dealer, one of the owners happens to ride a VFR, so he took the time to show me the basics about the bike. I didn't even know how to adjust the chain.

Its definitely a good idea to get all those fluids changed. Eventually, you're going to want to learn to do at least the most basic things, like changing your own oil and adjusting the chain. If your bike came with an owners manual, there should be step by step instructions in there. If not, I know that somewhere on this site you can download one. If you can do an oil change on a car, you can do it on your bike.

Trust us - you'll be able to handle changing your own oil. Just remember to take your time with the fairings so you don't go and break them. Once you "realize" how everything comes apart and goes together, it's a breeze.

The other positive about doing even some basic work on your bike is that you'll get to understand it a little bit. Last thing you want is to have a problem on the side of the road and you're scratching your head without even a clue on what you're looking at.

By the way - the 2002 to 2005 had a recall done on a wiring harness. Any Honda dealership can run your VIN and tell you if that recall was performed. Make sure you get that checked out.

You should be able to do it very easily......not sure how perfect the Delkovics fit but it should go on without too much fuss. Simple bolt on affair really. MY advice is get it all on and don't tighten any clamps until you get things lined up, etc. You can do it!

I have a 4th gen. I just put an 18" Delkevic on it today. Seems to be very well made and was easily fit. I haven't tried it with the baffle out, but with it in. it has a nice solid meaty sound and is certainly not noisy. Got it from Delkevic US for $159 plus $15 shipping.

I too have an 18" Delkevic slip-on and I more than happy with the sound and the low price was certainly hard to beat. I think it cost less than $200 Canadian shipped to my door. The install was relatively easy and I doubt the whole process took more than an hour from start to finish so easily something you should be able to do on your own with some basic tools. That being said, I noticed that your second post in this thread noted that you own a 2002 VFR800 so you will have the under seat exhaust with the two pipes coming out the back on either side of the seat. I took the liberty of checking the Delkevic eBay site and they do indeed offer a slip on system for your bike.

You might also want to phone the order desk and talk to someone. I know when I checked the stores actual website they did not list anything for my bike, but when I phoned and talked to the person on the order desk, they had a couple of options for exhaust systems for my particular bike and they offered me a better price than the one on their eBay store (I think I got about 10% off the eBay store price). The shipping was extremely quick and the staff on the phone were very helpful.

Good luck with your search and don't forget to post up some pics after the install. Welcome to the WORLD and we shall, from this day forward, consider you converted.

Also, don't forget to check out the SPECIFICATIONS section of the website where you find a copy of the Factory Honda Service Manual that you can download. Nothing comes in quite as handy as the actual Honda manual for figuring out how to (...........................................insert task here)

Servicing bikes is just like servicing cars - only on some bikes, getting the hood "up" can be a bit more arduous... Take your time, take photos if you need to and ask as many questions as you need...

Welcome noob.....The first thing I did after buying my bike after being bikeless for 10 years is I took it to a Honda dealer here in Simi and watched how he changed my oil......he just took off the inner black chin insert behind the front wheel and had easy
access to the oil filter... that's pretty much how I do it now. super simple matter of fact I'm doing it tomorrow. anything you need you can find here just like what someone said you can download a shop manual which is what I did, it's great. All you have to do is find the page for what you're looking for print it out and bring it out to the garage its awesome. good luck man. oh and also the first thing I did was replace that weak ass horn with a steble horn

Does anyone know if it would be good or bad if I was to buy a single exhaust system since the stock exhaust is dual? Thanks!

It doesn't make a difference which you get as long as it was designed to work that way. The Two Bros setup is actually one working can and the other is to keep the look symmetrical.
