Bought a rough VF1000R this weekend, a bike I have always liked and wanted to get checked off the "bucket bike list"

Currently painted black and down on both sides. This fall and winter a rebuild and repaint will be in order. So in the mean time, educating myself and amassing parts. Engine is the best part. 29,000 miles, starts immediately, doesn't smoke or leak oil. Shifts good, revs out well, clutch feels good. So encouraging news there.

    Several questions about parts through.

    1) Need to find a windscreen. Aftermarket is fine. I see Twisted Throttle has choices (original, spoiler, touring) in different shades from MRA. They are available in 4-6 weeks. Any other alternatives?

    2) Exhaust. Looking online I can't seem to find a full exhaust system designed for the bike, although I would settle for just a slip-on. I see many brands (Yosh & Hindle being the two most common). Obviously they no longer stock exhaust for a bike this old, but what are options?

    3) Footpegs/rearsets. Does anyone make a set for the VF1000R, or are we stuck fabricating ones to fit?

    4) rear seat cowl. One thing missing was the rear seat cowl. Not surprisingly they are NLA from Honda. Does anyone make a replica?

    5) Seat upholstery. Does a 1986 seat cover fit a 1985 bike?

My MRA shield was a weird fit. It was more bulbous than the stocker, plus I waited 3 month's to get it. Search here. Drill your own holes and fit can be questionable.
    Gustafsson Plastics

Full exhaust is hard to find. Find some aftermarket cans that you like and have a mid-pipe made up.

I've seen CBR sets used with little effort, but don't know of any direct bolt on.

Keep an eye out on Ebay, they come up once in a while. Prepare to pay.

Should fit no problem. you can recover yourself with a good staple gun and red vinyl or faux leather. Lots of fabbing since there's not a lot of off the shelf stuff. Keep us posted and don't forget the pics!

There has been a bunch of R parts on ebay. Most are way over priced IMO. But ebay can be your friend I've found stock and after market wind screens for the R. If any thing try and find a stock wind screen. After market is ?? There's one on there now. Does have a small crack. That is fixable though. They can be buffed back to new, not hard to do.

Good luck. you bought a limited edition 28yr old bike and you think your going to find parts for it?? :pound: :pound: :pound:

    sorry, good luck to ya

There is a couple of guys hoarding parts. I think I have a old post that one guy has about 6-8 exhaust/collector pieces. He might come off one. I'll look. Or I have photos of all the good headers for the 750. The R can't be that much different if you want to try and make your own I'll point you to them.

    1) Keep an eye on eBay. I found an OEM in pretty good shape, still with the safety sticker, relatively cheap. But aftermarkets are available.
    2) You'll just find slipons at this point. Probably need to fab some midpipes up, or fab up a whole new header. Hindle made a full system, I've seen one for sale in 5 years.
    3) Are you looking to raise or lower the pegs?
    4) eBay, keep $100+ handy. Haven't seen a replica.
    5) What hopit said, I reupholstered mine with about $10 of red vinyl.

Scored a cowl with seat bump pad off Ebay late last week. So for the unobtainable stuff it is just a windscreen.

Once the cowl arrives I will assess what repairs are needed cosmetically. Whole bike will get a full repaint so at that time I will try to match reds for the seat and redo the bump pad, which is black at the moment.

Stock exhaust is probably servicable but is a little beat up, will worry about it later as it would be one of the last things left to do anyway.

Going to try to get this one as close to showroom as possible. Reasonably far from that now..

    1) I'd like to know too!
    2) Those have not been available for over 20 years
    3) I might still have some machined rearset brackets from back when I used to offer those. Shoot me an email (preferably not a PM) and I can check
    4) Once again, been a couple of decades since you could get that part
    5) Yes, an 86 is the same as 85
