He should get a digital vernier caliper and measure length of all studs
It is possible to stretch bolts, had a diesel head replaced on Ford Ranger and bolt length was exceeding specs so all were replaced, BUT, extremely unlikely that a bolt that length could stretch that much, BUT possible to go just enough that nut doesn't match bolt thread and is able to work loose. Still doesn't explain extra thread length coming out of nylocknut this would indicate that the bolt was already over tightened, nylocknuts don't work themselves up the shank of the bolt all by themselves. He must of finished tightening it with excessive thread protruding (indicating that less thread was inside the hub) Maybe too busy watching the end of the hammer to realize?? He should also look at internal thread inside hub or it could/will happen again.

    His comment

So I'm guessing you think I either over torqued them or under torqued them?
I've got 25 years experience working on vehicles and rebuilding engines so don't insult me by saying I don't know how to properly torque a bolt. That's a stupid thing to say especially since you weren't there.

The book shows they need 58-72ft lbs. I torqued them to about 80ft lbs. Close enough.

I don't think you over torqued or under torqued them, I think you butchered them with a mallet, and no its not a stupid thing for me to say, but sure is a stupid thing for you to do, I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself, also glad you don't work on my bike.

If I walked into my mechanics work shop and saw someone attacking my bike with a mallet !!! hospital for him, jail time for me.

Carnage. Really I'm amazed. Using a sledge hammer to torque? In Aluminum? This is a total no brainer (in more ways than one). And I'm almost just as amazed that you could not feel this happening. I feel anything while riding and it is immediately identified. This is just all plain stupid but still I hope some learned what NOT to do.
The old adage of "right tool for the right job" is perfect here.

If in doubt use a hammer, bigger the doubt, bigger the hammer.
When I was 15 at trade school I had a teacher tell me that.
I think JWW must have taken similar schooling but took it literally

    The hammer photo:- GOLD

To the untrained eye, those are hammers, but to others those are torquing devices!

Fairly cheap torque wrench but certainly more accurate than a non-calibrated sledge hammer.

For axles and rr sprockets I use a Proto 6016 1/2 drive torque wrench. Very nice and accurate piece of equipment.
Smaller jobs a Norbar 3/8 drive torque wrench.

I have my professional mechanic do all my torquing. Maybe you have seen him demonstrate his tool. works great on watermelons too.

It's a shame that the OP/professional mechanic of 25 years has bailed out of his own thread, it's soooooooo much fun handing people that have dug themselves into a hole, a bigger shovel!
He was fun, in a sad sort of a way.
