Having a hell of a hard time removing the oil filter because I cannot get the strap wrench around the filter due to the coolant lines in the way. Anyone have to take the coolant lines off in order to have enough access?

I would get the filter cap wrench and use a ratchet. The caps are only $6 at my local auto parts store. You can bring your filter to verify fitment. Its a lot easier to access and you don't need as much of a throw with the ratchet/filter cap.

What I do is remove that inner chin plastic...four bolts...get one of those rachet oil filter wrenches that slides over the end of the filter and tightens when turning....very easy oil changes......

cool, ill get one of those wrench caps then. Always just did it with regular old strap wrench on everything else but looks like I need to invest the $6.

    Thanks for the info.

Not on this bike but when I had an R6 the previous owner must have tightened the oil filter on with an air gun or something. Needed to hammer a screwdriver through it and twist it off that way. Only for emergencies do that mind you!
When you buy a oem filter I think they come with a filter cap/key thingy?

You must be doing something wrong. I don't have a problem with mine. Maybe try it from the other side. You can only loosen it a very little bit though and have to re-adjust but that only takes seconds. Failing that, get one of those end cap thingies mentioned and Bob's you uncle.

I finally did get it off with the wrench, which was a pain in the ass, but next time I will use the cap wrench.

+1 what duccmann said. She'll come right off next time. Seems that 4k miles or every year for oil changes is about right. Please don't ask which oil is best.

Cap wrench. A small piece of paper towel between filter and wrench to make it nice and snug. Then use a socket extension. No fuss, no muss...oh and no hammering a scewdriver through the filter either.

Your filter shouldn't be ape armed on... Tighten all the way down and then give it a bit of a turn and you should be good to go....
