Hey good luck with the work. It took me almost four years to find a 98 or 99.

    AMEN!

Reasons I bought it anyway: they're bulletproof and there's nothing wrong I can't fix.

I bought some Ebay fairings after I crashed my bike. They currently reside in the attic. I wouldn't wish those things on my ex-wife.

Oh yeah, and that F3 made me pop wood.

I wouldn't worry much about the mileage on a VFR. I meet a guy that had 160k on his 1999 and it still purred like a kitten.

Check out all the rubber part yous can. That bike has been sitting out in the weather Looks like somebody tried to reupholster the seat or the PO was a 400 pounder.

yeah the seat was terribly reupholstered. I bought a new factory seat for $100
all the rubber bits looked reasonable except the tires.

YIKES! Tires too?? There's another 3-400 bucks. If the tires are as bad as the rest of the bike, be very careful riding it.

I'm thinking most of the guys here that are bike savvy are going to suggest you cut your losses on this one and maybe use it as a parts bike.

I am a motorcycle mechanic. That 3-400 in tires is really like $200 out of my pocket.
So far I'm in it for another $500ish on top of my purchase price and I've got a new headlight unit, reg/rec, chain and sprockets, seat, fairing bolts, fork seals, brake flush, oil change, valve adjustment, exhaust clamp, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. So all in all I'm getting a '99 with a power commander, mismatched fairings and some terrible spraypaint, new (all i listed above) for about $3000 and some change.
That's not too bad imo when I couldn't even find another VFR in my area for under 4k.

That's not that bad. I bought mine last year for $3K, and it needed tires, a new R/R (died 4 days after I bought it), and never had any maintenence done other than oil changes. Ended up doing all the brake pads, ALL fluids and new chain and sprockets. You'll probably be under what I spent once you're finished.
I spent a long time looking for a 5th gen wasn't going to pass on it.

Same boat. I was looking for a 5th gen for the better part of a year.
I found a bunch but they were all over 500 miles away.

A friend of mine served in the Navy. He has 8 kids and has been married 3 times... one day he confessed to me that a BOAT gave him the two biggest, joyous, days of his life:

1- The day he bought it...

2- ...and the day he finally sold it!

Sucks that the PO was such a dick, Paper, but sounds like you got the right attitude! Rock on brother, and we'll look forward to some pictures before, during and after the transformation is complete!

    Scissors.

    I've been slacking off guys.
I wrecked my truck 2 weeks ago...

Almost all of my parts are at my house, but all of my tools are at my work. What a pickle.

I've got a brand new headlight, seat, updated regulator (man this thing is massive), a few bolts, some sprockets and I think there's other stuff I'm forgetting.
I was about to order new tires, a chain, and rear brake master cyl rebuild, but it looks like I'll have to hold off on those until I can figure out the truck situation.
The seat is MINTY. I got it from a fellow forum member.

Looks like the wife is trying hard to cut into your bike budget by buying furniture.

Who needs chairs...she can sit in the floor :D

the price u paid is not bad were I live in SC except there not as popular cause people don't know that they are bullet proof, a stock 98-01 depending on condition and buyer is about 4,200,my suggestion is that EBAY is your new best friend, I would add up how much the parts are gonna cost if you use ebay and if your a good wrench monkey wich you sound like you are so if it all adds up I'd say do it, my 01 wasn't as bad but it was just sitting and not taking care of it so I worked on it for about 6-7 months and now I'm still finding stuff I wanna do, but be warned when you do this(if u like me) your bike will be a part of you, it's not gonna be a machine anymore and you will get obsessed, I've been through 3 girlfriends cause of her ("u love that bike more than me")but I'm married to my baby and will still be riding when the 2013 cbr, gxr, ect ect will be in the ground

(It looks good on pic but when I got there everything needed work)BEFORE: 2012-07-02 18.40.55.jpg
