    Hello people,

I acquired a VFR800 to work on as a project. The guy from whom I bought it had gotten it from another guy with the intent to use the engine in a buggy, unfortunately, he knows nothing about FI engines, just carbs. So he opted to sell to me, which I gladly took.

The few problems I am having with it has stalled me on going forward and hence I decied to seek you guys' knowledge and expertise regarding this bike.

I should say, the engine turns over but doesn't start. I noticed some lose vacuum hoses when I bought it and went ahead to route them appropriately with hopes that it would work. agh! Bleh!!!! No dice!!!!

I have read extensive (and stil lhave more to read) and I will try the tips I have noted and compiled this weekend. However, I DO NOT even know what generation the VFR800 is exactly...it seems to have one leg in 5th gen and the other in 6th gen and here is why.

Everywhere that I have tried to decode the VIN tells me that it is a 2002. That, I am pretty sure about. But most results I have gotten back either say it is a CBR600 or say it is just a Japanese manufactured bike. Carfax gave this:

    Vehicle:2002 HONDA CBR600F4

I have viewed the 5th and 6th gen VFR800 and my bike looks more like 5th gen...I thought 5th gen ended with the 2001 model. I have posted a link to the pics I could get...take a peek at the exhaust pipe position and the instrument cluster.

let me know what you think.

    Thanks in advance.

Those headlights are not from a 6th gen. The exhaust is not 6th gen, nor is the instrument panel or even the rear passenger footrests. Have you tried this site?

Looks like a 5th gen to me. Most likely a 2000 due to the yellow underneath the tank and the instrument cluster / white tach. Just my 2 cents.

Pretty much looks like a 5th Gen - headlights, and fairing match, the RR is located by the seat (6th gen its on the other side up front) and the side mount exhaust (6th gen are under seat).

Looks like an interesting puzzle - good luck and let us know how you get on fixing it.

Every pic there screams 5th Gen with a track screen. the id plate from the RH frame seems to be missing

100% 5th Gen probably late 2000 or 2001 based on the metal tabs on the 5th gen mk2 Tacho. Good luck rebuilding it though looks a bit of a basket case.

The fact that your asking infers that you have no registration or title papers. Are you planning on making this bike road worthy? I'm seeing red flags. Ride safe if you get it running.

yes I m planning to make the bike road worthy. It will take some work but I'm not in a hurry. I actually obtained a title but the seller did point out that it is a vfr800 but the title said its a cbr600. The only thing I am thinking is that maybe somewhere along the way, someone swapped the frame?
we confirmed the bike has no lien and isn't stolen.

    What redflags do you see?

CBR600 and vfr800 do not share the same frame. My 99 has a id placard on the left side of the frame, just above and forward of the coolant reservoir. It should contain the vin year.

The previous owner(s) removed the tags. The only ID on bike is the engraved VIN on frame.

Good to know the CBR and VFR do not share frames. I really think its a 5th gen also...and hope its a 5th gen engine with no mods. I will be tearing into it once semester is over.

Thanks to you guys for helping determining the generation and possibly year (I'm guessing 2001 - although the VIN screams 2002 with every decoder I have used.) Randy, thanks for the decoder too.

Now, I can start bidding on stuff I need.

    Thanks again.

I'm gonna go with Josh on this one - 2000. 5th Gen VFR.

2000 was the only year the bike ever came in yellow (in the US).

You better be quite certain of what you have there before you start throwing cash at parts.

What are the most significant differences between a vFR800 2000 model and a 2001 model?

    Any real changes?

    None at all. Color only.

Yellow is, was and always will be the fastest, though. And we suspect your bike was yellow since some previous owner only painted the visible areas, and didn't remove the tank to paint underneath (plus the foam insulation is still attached to the tank).

Think the early 2000s didn't have the 2 metal tabs in the dash, even so there is no way to tell if the dash or tank is actually original however the lack of fast idle lever means its a mk 2.

And check out the fuel inlets on the bottom of the tank, looks like someone tried to seal up a fuel leak with a tube of silicon.
