I've been using a Hein Gerke leather jacket for the past 15 years. It works well for me but is so incredibly hot in the summer. Does anyone have any suggestion for a jacket that will offer superior protection but will not roast you when the temperature is high? Anyone have experience with kevlar mesh jackets? Thanks.

I have a mesh Dianese jacket that I love to death, but what Maggot said is true. MotorcycleGear will give you plenty of options.

I have a Joe Rocket Mesh jacket, it's great for hot weather riding. I have no doubts it will save my ass in a crash. I dont think it will save my ass twice in a crash though, it's still just fabric (could be wrong just my opinion). But for what I paid ($80-100) brand new, like every thing else when you crash, it's replaceable.

My Joe Rocket Interceptor Jacket is also good for riding year around. Enough mesh to keep me cool, yet it covers up and also has an inner liner for the cooler rides.

My therapist says this is the best jacket for me year round.... I think shes just flirting with me and playing hard to get....No really she always changes addresses when she catches me peeping in her window late at night.

Thank you all for your input. One of my biggest concerns is skin abrasion in the event of an accident. It would seem to me that many of the suggested jackets would not stand up to friction very well. Any thoughts?

i have a teknic impulse perforated leather jacket. i got the white one cause its cooler in the summer and is damn near a perfect match to my rwb (shutup, lol). its leather, its padded, it fits very well and it ventilates great. not to mention that compared to some of the other jackets on the market, its very well priced. not the easiest jacket to find but keep ur eye on ebay, they arent rare.

Well Long...considering I live in Houston (3-4 hours from Dallas).

Its ok though... the same therapist gave me some pills to "make me feel better" . I dont feel any different... In fact my wife complains when I take them....they are blue in color.

If you are that worried about it, then you should look at:

Speedmaster 5.0 Suit at More Power Racing

I would trust my mesh jacket in a 60mph crash. I wouldnt trust it twice. I would replace it after the incident.

I would think that would go for just about any safety equipment, even in a car. But I do agree, I would trust my mesh jacket in just about anything I'm going to get myself into.

When considering gear, especially for hot weather, color is very important. (Light colors-----good, dark colors------bad!)
You may feel like a baddass but that flat black helmet will have sweat pouring into your eyes and no matter what material your jacket is made from black is gonna be hot.
Mesh and textile gear allows us South Florida people to ride "year round".

But with mesh jackets, of which I do not have one, doesn't all kinds of shit get stuck in the mesh, like bugs, debris, etc?? That's the big reason I never bought mesh anything.

Very true, really makes me wonder why I bought a white one too....

I just soak in the tub with some oxy clean once or twice a year. no biggie.

I have about 6 mesh jackets; 2 icon, 3 Joe Rocket, 1 Nitro and 1 leather icon, old school leather jacket and chaps, leather track gear, mesh FirstGear pants . It's a sickness I know. All of them are good for one thing or another, one temp or another. For Hotlanta summers I prefer the Joe Rocket Air, "winters" here gets a extra long Joe Rocket explorer type. Track days gets the full leather icon no matter what the temp. Find whatever looks good and fits well and protects for you. If I had to give up all but one I'd go with the Nitro. I know very little about the brand but it is the best all around jacket I have.

I've never had any issues with bugs btw.

Mesh is definately the way to go. Yes they are mesh, most are a mesh (nylon) compound. Mine is a titanium mesh. Each one has their own version. They all have, or should, forearm, elbow, shoulder and back armor. That's what saves you butt. Yes they'll hold up as most have pointed out. Removeable liners for the cooler mornings. Joe Rocket, Fieldsheer, Firstgear, there's a slew of them. I've seen a lot of folks wear leather jackets that have no armor. Yes they are hot, they look cool, but they don't offer the protection that a good mesh, or for the cool riding Textile will offer.

    My 3 cents.
