How much louder after the partial exhaust mod?

I know it has been covered many times and I have listened to the sound clips and Youtube videos. The problem is that I wonder how it really sounds in person. I haven't had the opportunity to listen to one up close. This is my situation-I live in an apartment complex (4 plex) and I don't want to be the dink with the super loud bike. Is it more noticeable when the engine is under load and relatively quiet at idle? I let the bike run to warm up while I finish getting my gear on so it would be on its fast idle, but I'm not the guy jackin the throttle. Since the rear wheel is off to get a new tire, I figured I would dig into it this weekend if the sound wasn't too obnoxious. For the guys who have done (or heard) this I would appreciate any input.

I did the full gut, and most new muscle cars are still louder most of the time. The catalytic converter knocks down the noise quite a bit, so opening up the exhaust just gives it a little rumble. :thumbsup: I can hear even a fairly stock harley when on my bike - and a hundred yards away I can still barely hear mine idling.

 

The best comparison I can make to mine is a mustang with borla exhaust. That's what mine reminds me of. I don't have the full gut though, I just have the 4 holes drilled from the outside of the pipes and the pipes cut from I side with a dremmel. Sounds really good, but far from obnoxious.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will just go ahead and do it. Its snowing (again) this morning so my ambition level isn't too high. The forecast says we will have another week of 40* temps... Uhg!

 

i just put an exhaust system on my 07. am fixing to put the stock exhaust in the attic so i have one here that i can ship to you if you hate it when its done. go for it man!

 

he is right. no viffer will ever sound as good as a screamin eagle 110 inch with vance and hines straight pipes! aaah, the joy of setting off all my neighbors car alarms when i come home from work at midnight.

 

Finished it up this morning and took it for a ride (short ride... it was 34*). Its kind of loud on a cold start but I doubt I will get any complaints. I kind of dismissed all the references to sounding like a V8 when I was reading up on this. That first ride changed my mind. I didn't get a chance to wind it out that much but it sounds really good "cruising" at less than highway speeds. For the money, its a good mod. Thanks for all of your comments.

Hi guys,
I did the partial gut a while back and then set about checking the new dB noise level. Aussie bikes are all plated with the standard exhaust level stamped on the plate. The measurements are taken 500mm from the left hand side exhaust at 45 degrees... at 5250rpm mine was stamped 87dB (A weighted). My partial gutted pipes at the same rpm and measurement distance is 91dB (A weighted).

So then its only a little louder but the note is much much better

My HKS full exhaust is pretty loud. You can wake up neighbors if you started it late at night. Sounds like a Ducati

 

I just got my VFR last week. I was really disappointed in how quiet the stock exhaust was so I started researching the partial exhaust mod and thought I’d share my opinions and results…

Tools & technique:
I used a 1” Lenox hole saw from Lowes and the $6 20-pack of Dremel cut off wheels. The 1” saw fits between the inner and outter pipes. I did not have any issues with the teeth being misaligned like some others have had. Using a slow speed drill and a lot of WD-40 I only needed one hole saw to do all the cutting on both cans. For the cutoff wheels, I used diagonal cutters to cut them down in size (to the shape of a stop sign) and then round them off on a large piece of scrap steel I had laying around so that they’d fit inside the exhaust pipe. I have a Harbor Freight adjustable speed controller that I plugged the Dremel into and I had it set to about 7/8 speed. I used about 4 discs per exhaust outlet.

Final results:
I’ve VERY pleased with the results. I was initially worried before starting the job that it would be too loud but it isn’t. At idle it’s quieter than any other sportbike with an exhaust I have but slightly louder and deeper sounding than the stock VFR exhaust. From off idle to redline in 1st-2nd it sounds BADASS. Not obnoxious in any way,and again still quieter than any aftermarket sportbike exhaust I've owner, just perfect enough to let the V4 sing. At 80-85 on the highway in 6th it is quiet enough that the wind noise in my helmet is louder. I’d do this mod again in a second. Total time spent was just about 2hrs. The only downside, if you want to call it that, is that it took about 20 minutes of riding for all the WD-40 to burn out of the mufflers. The first couple traffic lights I came to definitely got some looks from other drivers as my exhaust was smoking, LOL.
