Oh my now I've seen it all and it's only $3000. I like the line:
"2. The bike is 95% complete, very minor things still need to be done to it. I'd estimate 3 hours work if you have a buddy or two over for some beer & motorcycle time in the garage.

Aaaaa that would be you Toe, right?

Yep, all original parts except for the pipes and the paint. The tires look original though. I don't think a pristine 1978 CB550 would bring anything close to 4K.

Seems we have a couple of expert pricing gurus on board. So, what is that 550-4 worth if it lives up to the ad? . Gotta figure that some dudes are making some serious bucks and four k is a drop in the bucket list. For others 4k will buy a lot of beans or beans and bangers. A look beyond one's nose will many times indicate that all this subjective shit just ain't all it's cracked up to be.

A few years back I saw a guy drop 40k on a complete restoration of a 1949 Desoto. This was a frame up restoration. Came to find out the car was owned by the guys dad who was killed in the " Korean" conflict/war. The "kid' grew up to be a really big wheel with Microsoft.

Maybe we should have a thread contest to see who can make the longest conclusion jump..

Not much to repaint a couple of sideplates and a tank on the earlier Honda 4bangers. The can looks like a White Bros issue. Maybe our resident experts can tell us HTF they can tell if the headers and the rest of the exhaust system has been upgraded and why that might reflect on the price..

To each his own. To me, it seems like silly money especially since an original exhaust system and a matching original paint job could set you back half of his asking price. He says "All original parts, in perfect condition" and I just don't see that. You might get $4000 for a CB550 that was held in a time capsule, in fact I think you probably could. You can't for this bike.

I enjoy jumping to conclusions especially when it involves someone posting a bike and misrepresenting it as something it's not. I'll probably keep doing it too.

Oh My! Did I set someone off on a guilt trip? LOL

So Big Jim, how much would that stealer/dealer you are humping for pay for that bike in it's current non-pristine condition? It should be pointed out once again that everyone is not without funds for a bike like that and we can assume that such a buyer might even have the pesos to pop for those missing parts that seem important to only a collector of stockers.

Seems like you have a handle on this particular bike and it's bitsas or missing bitsas. Is there something we should know that you are holding back so you can drop a bomb on us pricewise?

If I had one of those time capsule bikes I sure the hell would get that 4k and more but that's sort of beside the point since we are not in that arena yet.

I have always really been appreciative of some old fart telling me what I can and cannot do. Get a grip there pard.

Which brings us to the accusation that this guy with the Honda 4 has misrepresented anything since a sharpie like yourself has figured out that a paintjob and a changeup in the pipes is somehow a some sort of con.

Maybe you just believe all that shit your bossman at the dealership has fed you and now you are a true believer.. God save us all..

BTW there Jim, I am a long time member of AMA, VME and MOA and am welcome at the meetings of the Norton Club. So save the platitudes for the mullets.

There is a nice one on ebay for $5900. Honda : CB in Honda | eBay Motorcycles
You're right things are subjective. This is western pa, and the cost of living here is pretty low. 4 grand for that bike is very high.
It is a nice survivor but can't touch the one on ebay. I know the it's 2 grand less, but I would put that 550 at b/w $2-2500.

    So?

Look, I am not a guru. I'm not telling you what to believe but I have an opinion. I thought we could express opinions around here? The guy posted his bike as "All original parts, in perfect condition" and it's not. I think his price is way out of line. Just my opinion. Nuff said.

That $5900.00 is the "buy now" price. " Isn't that amazing" what can be garnered about a bike from a low res pic on a flatscreen monitor and copy written by some unknown seller.

I am not at all surprised that Big Jim has not scooped up both bikes, parted one out and sold the good one for ten grand.. Well maybe five k in Western PA where the livin is easy..

Oh shit! I thought for once this grasshopper had found Kung Foo Nirvana. Maybe the guy is a dealer and this allows some latitude in the truth or like they say if it ain't on paper, it ain't worth the paper it's written on. A thousand pardons for the prepositional phrase but that is my opinion and on it I am sticking.

Now we get to the meat of things. How does a real guru define "equipment."

Gee whiz Jim, I thought you'd be impressed that I am involved in the motorcycle community and have been for quite awhile. Oh well, I know now I coulda woulda shoulda sprung for that 500-4 when I had the chance or even popped for the giveaway price on a John Player Norton but instead I (sob) bought the R100RS mit Krauser and the SR500.

Still got em too.. Wanna make me an offer? Keep in mind that I am not that enamored with stockers. So to make sure the EPA doesn't bust us both for not keeping the air clean and to keep things up front and even, In your opinion what are my old bikes worth?

I am West of Western PA too so be gentle.

Uh....was I really that far off base saying that 550 is overpriced?
I'm not sure why this has escalated in a thread to make fun of craigslist ads.
I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know more about motorcycles than you because I clearly don't, and you clearly wanted it known.
But I provided an example of a nicer 550 that would be worth dropping money on, and answered your question about what I thought it was worth.
And here is an even better one:
    '74 Honda CB550 $5,000 OBO
Hey it's 1k more and hasn't been inspected since 1987. But what do I know...
