I'm going on a long trip this summer and I havent run into any electrical issues yet but dont want to take any chances, all these warnings about r/r failing on the 5th gens is making think I should just replace it and not risk it.

Im not sure if the r/r has ever been replaced on my 99 as I just bought only 2 months ago. heres some photos of what it looks like now:

I just looked at the original R/R I replaced and it has flat fins. That looks like the upgraded OEM R/R.
I'm in the process of wiring a volt gauge up to keep an eye on the charging system.
Here is what the original R/R looks like:

Anyone know if the upgraded OEM r/r with the curved finns is still prone to failure?

Yes even the upgrade stocker over time will eat it. But you might as well just check it as is anyhoo. The part usually doesnt go out suddenly.
So you could monitor it and then change it when it's due. Check your stator connectors too. ---

    - A digital multimeter and a voltmeter for the bike is a worthwhile investment.
    - I'm guessing but your part looks aftermarket.

I have to wonder why would Honda make an "upgraded" r/r that still burns out? Did they make these things weak for a reason? Do they burn out to protect other electrical/wiring?

Mine is a 2001 model with 61000K's and it still has the original r/r.
Aparently the later ones were much better, but I rthink they have an extra wire in the connections.

The upgraded one also has a backing plate the old one did not come with.
Also helps to put on with thermal grease for the heat transfer.

My 98 had the upgraded stock one and it went bad. Never left me stranded, it would just die for a split second for no reason which was not safe. I bought a mosfet one on ebay that is working great so far. This is the one: MOSFET Regulator Rectifier Honda VFR800 1998 99 | eBay

Cant tell what brand it is, if its a Ricks, your probly ok. If its a electrosport, chances are it will have short life.
IMHO - its not a good idea to buy a R/R from Ebay unless you know exactly what it is. No name brand = no name quality.

Mine was a 2000 with the "upgraded" OEM R/R, it was on it's way out last season. I just wired in a mosfet unit from Roadstercycle. Top notch.
