Pardon my inexperience but I am I crazy or does this metal thing not belong inside the gas tank? I can also see several electrical components inside the tank (fuel pump?).

You are fine. I am pretty sure that is just a visual marker to assist with figuring out when your tank is full of gas. The electrical components inside are a fuel pump and level sensor.

That is inside to prevent the fuel nozzle from dropping too far and denting the tank. If you notice how it is positioned, it's right accross from where you stand when filling up.

Yes, I'm full of useless info like that.

Indiana must have really long fuel nozzles!

According to the Honda owners manual, it's a visual indicator for the fuel level, fill to the bottom of this marker to avoid overfilling.

Which year VFR is your bike? I don't remember seeing that on my 05 VFR. But I only filled the tank couple times so far :)

The OPs question might answer some of the questions about," is my (fill in the blank generation) the same as a (fill in the blank with a year or generation) "

My (mach 1) 91 is a generation something or other. To assume that this makes a 90 or a 91 or a 92 or a 93 a cookie cutter with zip changes is kinda weird. This bar may be something that Honda added in mid production because it was a good idea and just because they didn't sit down and write us all a letter about it doesn't particularly mean any more than some bikes may be just a bit different than others.

some of those gas nozzles are long especially the ones with the rubber guards on them. Not a great idea to prang either the in tank fuel pump or the level mechanism. Betcha a VFR tank is a bitch to get into.. They make em really good..

My 99 has the same thing in the tank, but I always fill it up to the very top of the filler neck. I use the bar as a guide to when it's time to slow the fill rate to a trickle.

I have the same thing on my '98. I thought it had something to go that mine is a CA model. For me it was a pain in the ass for fill up and I ended up grabing a pair of claw pliers and bending it out of the way. No more Honda "we know better" for you policy.

A quick calc tells me I've filled up my '99 about 450 times in it's life. Never had a problem. Now the vapor condoms on CA fuel nozzles, they're a PIA.

Are those damn things still around in CA? Still a few in Oregon and Washington where they have what used to be called "station attendents" , who pump your gas.

Optional of course when it comes to bikes. A little scary to use when gassing up a bike. One spill, when it takes both hands to get the damn thing to work, on a hot engine and Ka-Boom.. might be the result..

Another example of politicians at work.. All kinds of lawyers that ride.. Too many of late.. What this country needs is a good ten dollar cigar made in Cuba and some politicians that ride. (bikes, not each other)
