Hey, had my VFR 800 since November and its been great.

However, for the last 3/4 weeks, when it gets hot it makes a kinda "popping" noise when you start to move the accelerator. It happens more when its hot and whether its in gear or neutral.

I've popped to my local bike shop who think its a trait of VFRs, but being the sceptical bugger I am, I want to make sure.

So, if you've got a 2001 VFR 800 and when its warm it does this, let me know so I can put my mind at ease. However, if this is not normal, any suggestions as to what it may be are also welcome. Cheers, Del:smile:

I'm not positive that I'm thinking of the same thing you're saying or not but my bike does make a popping kind of noise kind of like a tuned racer when I load it up with fuel and then engine brake. It's almost like little backfires. It sounds pretty cool to me. It's not when I start going though it's slowing down... It's pretty smooth if I'm taking off.

    Hey:

I have an 01 as well with 20K on it and no popping. However, I would suggest that you look at what's coming out of the exhaust when you experience the popping. If it's excessively white or black you have problems. Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? If so, you could have a mapping problem with the fuel injection.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

Thanks for reply. Thats the strange thing, there is nothing unusal coming out the exhaust and they are standard cans. Theres no loss of power or flat spots or anything, just this faint pop sound

Check the many threads and explanations on the simple PAIR valve mod. It solved my snap crackle and pop!

If the noise is coming from somewhere under the tank then its most likely the Pair valve solenoid or maybe the airbox Flapper, used to have it loud only when the engine was Hot on my Gen 6 but it is much quiter on my Gen 5.

This could have to do with your SAS (Secondary Air Supply) which injects fresh air into the exhaust ports help burn any unburnt hydrocarbons. The problem could be more indepth....like your bike is running too rich maybe, and the SAS is causing the pops moreso because of this.

Yep,,sounds like what we call the SAS a "flapperValve"...They can be very noisy sometimes on the 5th gen...I oiled mine and made sure it would move easily and no more screeching/popping noises...

Take the gas tank off and check the SAS and make sure it is not sticking..
