Suddenly I don't feel so good. I guess I should stop complaining about the smell of cow shit here in Chilliwack then. I was looking about there on Google Maps right after reading your initial post and was wondering why that community on the west shore was so bleak looking and seeing no boats on the water there. Thanks for the edumacation Stuke.

Actually Randy, I kinda enjoy going there from time to time to check it out, as it is very peaceful, and quiet for the most part. If you go in the cooler (Late Fall, Winter, Early Spring), it actually can be quite nice to stop at the "north" end of it to relax and take in the scenery. The smell is very little to none at times, and the sea is pretty to me.....well, it has its own "dilapidated" look. I actually do recommend you stopping there next time, in fact, I will give you Tour de Salton Sea personally. It is amazing actually to see the amount of people that still fish in that big toilet....and worse yet, they eat the fish! The salinity is over 2.5 times the salinity of the ocean, so the tilapia are pretty much at the max of their limit. The Corvina which had thrived for years, have died off years ago having not being able to live with the increased salinity.

The San Diego water district made a deal years ago to purchase excess water from the farmers in Imperial Valley, so each year the Salton is going to get smaller, and smaller. If you know anything about died up lake beds, they can cause all sorts of respiratory ailments from the sedients on the bottom of the sea. As it has in the past in other areas, it will be a toxic dust bowl at times if that is allowed to happen. There are several "Save the Salton Sea" ideas still, but most cost billions, and as you know most states are broke, so most people can see very little benefit from preserving a stinky toilet in the desert that nobody lives around.

    Yadda, yadda, yadda....

We will see if I can make it down in the spring if I am not working and finances permit. I will take you up on the offer and give you good lead in "warning" that I am coming. Parts of that County Hwy S22 looks like it would be a nice ride.

I’ve been to the Salton Sea and its “ruins” many times. I agree with Derstuka. It is a very peaceful place to visit and not at all smelly during the colder months (it’s bad in the summer, that along with the swarms of bugs). I believe parts of the movie The Island was filmed right there where the abandoned “resort” and Hotel is. It’s a great place to explore, ride to, and just check out from time to time as it’s so different from many places. Actually, the whole desert stretching from the Mexico border all the way out to Death Valley is filled with a lot of interesting areas, history (including ancient volcanoes and lava fields), and cool roads (just not twisty). If you have tires you want to burn through quickly, spend a few days riding around the deserts of SoCal and enjoy! I love the desert. Having said that, the icing on the cake is all roads that lead to the desert are usually twisty (because they all have to pass up and over a mountain range or two).

BTW, did you all know that the Anza-Borrego Desert (where Long and Derstuka rode in [and molested dinosaurs]) used to be under water? Yup. Massive sea creatures used to swim there. When the water drained from the rising earth, the place became a dinosaur playground. After those died off (except the ones who got molested), they were replaced with Mastodons and Sabre Tooth Cats. You can still ride/drive to the “drainage” area where all the ancient sea water went to: it’s called “17 Palms”. Because there are about 17 Palm trees still growing there with water under the ground to be had. Borrego Springs has a Visitor Center that explains all this in detail. Cool place for a field trip.

No doubt. But I live on the bottom of a dried up (drained actually) lake bed. Sumas Lake was drained in the mid 1920's but that was well before the population was such that human's shit and crap was enough to cause a toxic mess here. Our drinking water comes out of the aquifers here and is is as good as it gets. No chlorine taste here. If you are interested:
