I would be hesitant to buy an unknown brand to be honest. If that sucker breaks, it could kill you or punch a hole in your engine cases. I would save money somewhere else.

++^ D.I.D. seems to be one of the best for the money. And while you are at it, change the sprockets when you replace the chain.

That's what I would likely do... which takes back to the 'can afford it' point... I know the DID is top of the line...

Can anyone with a DID or other well known chain brand measure the plate thickness? The pins could always be of different material as well, but tensile strength of the ebay chain is listed and metallurgy greatly affects that.

I see a number of 10k plus mile reviews on those chains. Of course its from guys building chops, so power and use is not exactly the same as what we might put them through. However, if the plate thickness of the "cheap" chain is the same as a well known brand and tensile strength is equivalent, then we are being told that they make their chains from steel as strong as the major brands. If many users are getting many miles on their chain, it can't be all that bad. If nothing else, it could be a good stopgap until you can afford a better chain.

I have used both DID and RK with good results. I have never tried an offbrand on my streetbike. I have used them on small dirtbikes where the HP is pretty low and had no problems.

If you are leary of the one on ebay and If you need to save some cash look to a bikemaster brand chain. At minimum it is a brand. The prices are decent. Same with JT sprockets.
May not get the life etc that a DID and other brands may provide but it will get ya rollin again.

RK sells a chain and sprocket kit that is a decent option

Have you looked at drive systmes and or sprocket center for prices.

I bought a cheap chain off ebay when i was gettin my bike back together. It only lasted a season but the main problem is that it kept stretching and stretching!! I was adjusting it every hundred miles till it got so loose in one spot and tight in the other that I replaced it and sprockets with RK brand and hardly ever touch the chain now. Sure the noname brand was cheap when i needed it to be but if you plan on keeping the bike then it's well worth a good chain! ...and sprockets.

I think I'll pass on this chain for now. I don't 'need' need one yet, and can wait until summer or so to buy the whole set of good stuff.

I think that is the best idea right there. If you don't need it now, save some coin and buy something better later.

I bought a red chain from ebay and I thought it was a good deal about the same price as that one. I had it on my bike for about 2 months at the most(Maybe 1500 miles). I also found myself having to tighten the chain about bi-weekly. I forgot to oil it for one week (so it went for 2 weeks not being lubed) and then I cleaned and oiled the chain. It clanked and clicked like a SOB. Then It got really badly rusted. I live in a humid area, but this was bad even for here. I then replaced that POS with a 80-100$ RK chain. It is perfect and I have got at least 8k out of it so far and I have had no problems out of it. IMO if you maintain any chain ie. Lube and clean it at least weekly you can make most chains last a good bit. a good rule of thumb is to clean and lube a chain every time you get it wet and weekly. If you do that you can prolong the life of the chain by 2x to 3x one of these cheap hains and you wount pay but about 2x as much for a good chain.

Tires and chains are two things you should always buy the best of. Cheaping out has its own CO$T$ !!!!

Buy a Japanese-made chain, nothing from China. :boobies7::mad:

In addition to what everyone else is saying, that chain has a clipped master link. Those types of master links are really only for bikes 500cc and below...

I've got an RK chain/sprocket set on my bike and it's gone 6k with very little stretch.

Oh no here we go again............ I've used master links for over 25 years on 750/1000cc bikes and never never had a problem. If you don't know the proper way to instal one then I can see where the problem is. Now if the bike has well over 100hp that's a different story....may be.?

I wouldn't hit a dead dog in the ass with one of those ebay chains! Tsubaki has some great chains also. I keep going back to them because my others DID/RK didn't get the mileage that the Tsubaki's gave me with there Sigma and Omega chains. Just my experience there. Yes I bought same tinsel strength chain.

Oh yea another pet peeve of mind: Chains DON"T stretch! They wear. Measure the side plates on a worn out chain vs a new one (of same type) and they will be the same. The distance between links will be bigger cause the pins and side plate holes(inner links) wear. Ok I'm done.

Always buy the best quality you can afford. You will never be dissapointed.

+1 Grey, on Tsubaki. I hear the only problem they had was if the battery drain dripped acid on them. My thoughts are, battery acid would be a problem on any chain! So watch drain tube placement.

If you want to use a master link that is not riveted, use some light gauge safety wire around the outer link (thats what I used to do with my race bikes.) A nice pair of duck billed pliers are in-valuable for cinching the "clip" some modified (grinded) vice grips are good too.

I got a riveting tool from RK that comes in a far out, cosmic blue metal box, :homer: it will out last all my bikes I believe...Quality never goes out of style yah know...:drinkers:
