I am also not a fan of religions, but that is not the point in all this.

I am a member of another forum where the mental health concern was also being overlooked. The weapon is a tool, the sickness is the willingness to do it. There was something wrong with him that I would not be surprised to hear was ignored for a very long time.

Once I pointed that out, people felt the same as here. This type of behavior comes from somewhere and we are a big enough Nation to do a better job of taking care of ourselves. Treat the actual sickness and don't waste our collective time/energy on red herring, political issues.

I was once told that god does not make or let bad things happen that is our own freewill. But that he does find a way to make good things come from the bad things. As much as I hate to see it happen maybe this tragedy will bring about more security at our schools. So when some lunaticfeels the need to take innocent lives at least it won't be our children. I can assure you the parents of those little children that lost their lives sure as hell wish someone had been thereto stop him.

This was claimed to have come from actor Morgan Freeman, but regardless of who said it, I think it holds true. I also feel the same way when some "celebrity" dies, the media puts them on a pedestal and somehow they become "saints", regardless of anything they may have done or accused of doing in the past. Whitney Huston and Michael Jackson are just recent ones that come to mind. I would much rather hear of people who lost their lives defending our country or sacrificed their lives so that others would live. i.e. The Real Heroes!

"TURN OFF THE NEWS...You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

As long as I can keep my M1A. Coincidently I keep it close to my childhood bible. Hopefully I'll never need or have to use either. Comforting to know they're both there though.

Great! Is there any discussion the forum on timelines? I would be particularly interested in establishing whether Ronald Regan cut funding nationwide for mental health or did he join the NRA before that?

Any leads on a couple of RPG's or some landmines. I love tools.

Did Morgan Freeman really say that or do ya just want to think he said that so you can agree with a celebrity?

BTW bag all that shit about the toys I was interested in. I have found Nirvana and just in time for Christmas.

Like I said, "regardless of who said it, I think it holds true...", I was just placing it to his credit if it were indeed him who said it. I place no more credibility on what celebrities do and say as I do for anonymous internet forum posters. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

Always refereed to it as M2 or Ma-deuce, heavy SOB if you ever had to carry the receiver or barrel. Lost my water baloon license years ago.

I know DaHose brought it up, but when did such things become tools?

Maybe thats part of the problem. I know you were being sarcastic & I was going right along with you. Have firearms become such commonplace in our society that we think of them as tools. What's next kitchen utensils with select fire? Have our kids gotten so used to choosing "weapons" from a video game menu that they don't think of them as weapons?

I hope the authorities find the low life that called in a threat to the St. Rose Catholic Church. As if the people of Newtown haven't suffered enough.

This is a tragic event. It will happen again. Well meaning people will pass laws that will have the opposite effect. Remember, schools are gun free zones. Perhaps what needs to happen is to empower the potential victims. They should have as good a chance at protecting themselves as someone at home. If the first thing the terrorist saw was a gun leveled at him, maybe there would be less victims. We will never know. What we can count on is the press and well meaning but poorly informed people passing feel good laws that have no real affect.

Looks like it was a bit into a hoax, unless Mr. Freeman's denial that he said that is a hoax too. Would there now be any part of the "statement" you'd like to dismiss now that the evidence has proven inconclusive and specious?

I sure wish I had that ability to dismiss the behaviour and thoughts of all those celebrities. Is there some trick I might be missing?

This is what Obama's disgustingly insincere speech looked like:

I have seen crocodiles shed more convincing tears, FFS.

It reminded me of seeing Bill Clinton at Ron Brown's funeral.

Nope, never had one. carried one or fired one. You? To respond to your "commonplace" question, perhaps in many circles these weapons are not thought of as tools but more as objects of worship.

Weapons like that are tools. Tools of war. What might be deduced is that if what we are currently seeing in the media is credible, this psycho used his mother's gun. WTF did she need with a weapon like that for? A person who is that far gone under current gun law is going to get what he wants somewhere anyway.

Sure this dude was nuts. In my travels I have learned not to equate nuts with not being smart.

IMO this tragic event might be the last straw and no matter how many gun "fanciers" cry, bitch, piss and moan and wrap themselves in the mantle of the US Constitution, the gun laws are going to change.

I just hope the laws don't change before next season when I go out for deer with my truck mounted Vulcan.

While I'm a big fan of TV Series Arrested Development and secretly lament Portia De Rossi being a Leso I'm not sure why you'd care about Obamas speech, he's not our President ?

After this tragedy most sane people outside the US would think so.

Mind I'm not that I'm not against people owning guns for a purpose having hunted many rabbits, 'Roos, Foxes and Wild Pigs on my Aunties Farm over the years from the age of 7 but I've never understood the need or fascination to own Semi auto Military weapons in the home. When being taut to hunt from early on was clearly instructed to only use the appropriate gun ( tool ? ) for the animal and be sure of a one shot clean kill before firing so mainly used single or 5 shot Bolt action hunting rifles of various calibres.

Ten years ago I'd spent many months working in the States and made many good friends a couple of which owned guns similar to the ones used but despite a few 'round the BBQ discussions was never convinced of their need to own these basically anti society weapons though concede I'm not American and admit to not being in a position to understand nor judge.
