    No more twinkies, 2012-11-14T225024Z_744725384_TM3E8BE1DB602_RTRMADP_3_HOSTESS-BANKRUPTCY-LIQUIDATION.JPG
    now I'm sad,
Baker's Union would rather kill them off then keep their jobs,
    That's too bad.

Twinkies, Zingers and Ding Dongs are all woven into the very fabric of American life. They will not be gone from store shelves for long. I think a bigger problem than the unions (and yes they were a problem) is the fact that Hostess got in bed with some venture capital firms that demanded growth and a return that was just not possible in a lucrative but flat market. I'll bet the margins are really thin for a company delivering a perishable, time sensitive product 7 days a week. Contrary to popular myth Twinkies do not last forever. It's the Hostess cup cakes I'll miss even though I haven't had one in years.

Twinkies have a shelf life of 21 days. hey closed the factory literally just down the street from where I work about 8 years ago or so. Sad. I knew a few people that once worked there. You could always tell the good baking days...

Tiger will hopefully see the return of the orange cupcakes. Sad to say, but the Little Debby brand fruit pies were better. Had more filling in them.

It is always sad when businesses fail especially ones that seem to be successful with a great product line. The problem has always been how to shift resources from the old to the new (if it is indeed possible) without undue hardship and this is still the big question. How does someone who has worked in bakery production for 20 years go into a tech field or some other form of employment?

I was thinking that Little Debby stocks should increases due to the higher demand for snack cakes.

There used to be a bread factory on I75 near Dallas. Driving by there was wonderful with the smell of fresh bread. Went on a tour of that place when I was a Cub Scout and at the end of the tour we had fresh hot bread right out of that huge conveyer oven. Like everything else it's gone now.

I think Tigers love fresh baked white bread.

There was also a Y&S Candies in IL that I visited my senior year of HS. Since gone. It produced something like 85% of all the red (cherry) Twizzlers for North America, or something like that. We walked out of there with about 8 -10 lbs of the stuff per person. I think it took a few years before I was able to eat it again. Not because I was sick of it, but what they had to test for. You don't want to know. I also remember doing the tour of the wonder bread plant. It was on a day that they were making bread, so they made each one of us a little loaf of bread to eat. Now, I work in at another endangered species, the newspaper...

Yep, another endangered worker's habitat. I worked for 15 years in the check processing industry. I got out just in time. There are lots of businesses that have fallen to the changes brought about by the Internet. Kodak anyone?

18 years at Kodak for me in Toronto. Many trips to the Kodak magic kingdom in Rochester. A very techy company when you were able to get behind the scenes. I saw a lot of cutting edge digital activity in development in mid '80's but they held on to their cash cow, silver halide technology, for too long without the full diversification we see these days within the conglomerates. From Kodachrome to Cup Cakes the world keeps on changing. Enjoy the ride (especially on the back of an '86 RWB 750!)

Yep, Kodak, a very trend setting company in its day. I was out riding and met a guy on a Kawasaki Concours. We started talking and I found out he worked for Kodak. He didn't know for how much longer. He was the sole surviving tech for the old microfiche diversion and he was installing photo kiosks in Wal-Mart. It is the nature of business and it seems that technology changes so rapidly that even the strongest companies are left vulnerable to change.

We actually have some Kodak stuff here. Software. It changes the PDF files into what comes out on the trendsetter - piece of hardware (Kodak) that burs the image onto a special aluminum plate for the presses. Out press, well, one of them, looks just like the one that was in The Green Hornet near the end. Same blue color, ours was just not that advanced. THe paper does not have the little automatic loading robots running around.

Hostess specialized in industrial-scale cholesterol-delivery devices that tasted like wax. A tough sell nowadays, to be sure.

However, the local baker down the street from my place seems to be doing just fine peddling his croissants and maple bars . . .
