Thinking of getting the factory adjustable wind deflector but can't see plunking down the $$$ if it is ineffective.
Anyone here got one on their 1200 seventh gen that can give a recommendation?

I know there are some cool aftermarket jobs-so is this thing a viable option?

I like the idea that it is adjustable and removeable....

    Thanks!

I have one on my bike. Still playing around with it. I've had it since new. I don't feel much turbulence but I do get a lot of wind noise. I'll take it off sometime soon and see what the difference is like. If it ever stops raining here!!

Can someone help me understand how this is installed? Is it an add on to the existing screen or a different screen all together?

It is a separate piece of plastic that bolts on over top of the stock screen. There are two bolts on each side, one acts as a hinge to allow different angles. The lowest angle is parallel to the stock screen, and you can increase the angle to push the oncoming air up higher. In the photo, you can see the dark pieces of plastic that are used to attach the deflector. YOu can also see the rearmost bolt on the left side (of the photo) that sets the angle. The hinge (front) bolt is barely visible behind the mirror stalk.

I have the windscreen extender on mine.
I'm 6' 3" and it does make a bit of difference.
I took it off and tried the bike with out it. Back roads were fine and the freeway just had a minor amount of buffeting.
I came from the race side of things and am new to the world of sport touring so there are Many here with more experience than I.
I personally like the look of the bike much better with out it and don't feel there is enough positive to offset the negative.
I have decided to remove it for good.

Just to clarify, you're talking about a "windscreen deflector". Honda also sells for this bike a "wind deflector set", which are essentially hand guards. I have one mounted, but still not sure I can give a really definitive answer on its effectiveness. I can tell you I like it way better than the VStream shield I tried which just about ran me off the bike from the noise! I don't think there is ever a definitive answer when it comes to windscreens since your height (or more specifically your torso length) is a huge factor. Ditto for arm length, stock or aftermarket seat, stock bars or Helis, Spieglers, etc. Too many variables to get a useful answer from someone else. Your best bet is to just try it and see if you like it. But that's pretty much the case with any ergonomic mod. Maybe Natevit will make you a deal on his once he removes it?

Dangerous Dave your correct I am speaking about the windscreen deflector. I also have the wind deflector set on my bike ( much dryer hands in the rain).

JohnTz, as far as mounting, there is a bracket on each side that attaches to the nuts that hold on the mirrors. that in turn holds the black plastic pieces you find in between the deflector and the grey portion of the windshield mount. Also, the black plastic pieces have a strip of adhesive tape that sticks to the grey portion of the windshield mount. My guess, this is to minimize any whistling you might get.

I would be interested in selling mine BTW.

I test rode a used '10 that had both the adjustable add-on deflector and helibars. While I could immediately feel the difference the helibars made to the riding position, I couldn't quite tell what the deflector was doing, in any of the positions I adjusted it. Dave is right about these thing being highly dependent on rider's dimensions. I'm 5'7", so perhaps a taller rider might get more used out of that add-on lip.

For me, I prefer having two separate screens. The stock OEM screen was a PITN to remove, so once I got it out, I am never gonna put it back on. I've been riding with a Zero Gravity Sport Touring screen, which for my height just about blocks out all air flow to my upper torso and neck. It is great for "Winter" riding around here, which normally stays in the 40's and 50's Fahrenheit and occasionally dips toward freezing. For warm/hot weather, I am gonna switch to to shorter screen for more cooling air. I am liking the Puig Z racing screen. For the price of the OEM Windscreen Deflector, I can buy at least 2 aftermarket screens.

    My $0.02

Yes the OEM option is too much. I bought and installed the Puig last week and for $72, it'll work for me year round.

I negotiated a few accessories with a demo last fall. I've only had it out for around 600km with the wind screen on it, all in cold weather, it has helped some in the neutral position but haven't moved it yet. It is solid and didn't make things any louder. I'm 5'10"' and have helibars, at higher speeds the wind gets me nearer the top of the helmet now instead of in the face shield.
I'd rank it with the same OKness as the helibars, love the heated grips though.

Took a ride tonight with the wind shield accessory in the most protective position for the first time, it worked great, really happy.

I think it works. I noticed less buffeting and fewer bugs on my faceshield after installing it. However, it does nothing to help you in the rain. I was hoping for some wind tunnel tested laminar flow magic to protect me from the rain. Not so much...

But it does look kinda goofy! :)
