The weekend before last I went out for a weekend ride with two other VFRW riders. They are not active here much but I met them through this forum when i first got my ride. It was a well mapped out ride, mostly by Chomper, who is great at this, where we trailered to Spokane, then rode around Coeur d'Alene Idaho, south west to Oregon and were to head back up to Spokane and trailer the bikes back to south west BC. Saturday's ride was great. Sunday started out great somewhere in north east Oregon. That was until about 10:00 when Chomper "Murdered a poor defensless deer.

Rather than rewrite the story, here is the link to Chomper's post at VFRD, where he goes by jfviffer:

Taken out by a kamakazi F#*n Deer - OTHER Motorcycle Talk (non vfr) - VFR Discussion

Enough cannot be said about ATGATT. Chomper, amazingly, was able to get on that bike and ride it from the accident scene, all the way to Spokane. That took about four or hours I am sure, where we checked into a hotel for the night, then trailered back. It is amazing the assistance, and offers of further assistance we got from total strangers down there. The bike is, in all likelyhood, going to be written off. A portion of the rear upper frame beneath the seat is broken, and I don't think there is a single panel that is not destroyed. Chomp is insured so a new bike is in his future....I hope. He is a talented rider, far greater than myself. He had no chance as he was coming around a right hand curve with a hill on his right, and deep river bed to his left. This is where the deer jumped up and out from. Chomp would not have seen this spookie animal and says he didn't until he actually hit it. He not only hit the deer, but a tree, then flew down that bank about 20 - 30 feet deep onto rocks below, landing on his back.

I have been to similar scenes in the past in my former life, and when I came around that corner, after Kingsley, who had pulled over, my heart sank. Fortunately Chomper was able to immediately get up, climb the bank and wave Kingsley down. Other than one saddle back panel at the side of the road, we would not have seen him and have ridden right by him. Someone was watching over Chomp.

I do have pix but am hanging onto them until Chomp has provided them to the insurance companies. I will post them up in this thread then when Chomp gives me the go ahead.

Chomper has no broken bones and is sore as hell, but in the true spirit of a viffer dude, he is on the mend.

BTW....three of the people who stopped to help were bow hunters. Once we were up and fine, they tagged, gutted and hauled the deer away. I dunno, but be damned if I would eat road kill.

Road kill or not, if it was the deer that took out my bike out I'd be having Bambi for breakfast, lunch and dinner until there was nothing left but wishful thinking! :potstir:

Glad your friends alright Randy. ATGATT thumbs up. Insureance can pay for the bike, your friend was able to walk away, Bambi became dinner for someone. Other than your friend out of a bike and bumps and bruises that he endured and how the end result could've been far worse sounds like a win(ish) to me.

Glad you are ok Chomper. Sounds like you were in for quite a ride. More and more hard data (no pun intended) of why everyone should wear ATGATT. Stop in and say hi once in awhile boss....Long wants to give you a BIG hug when you do!

Last time I created road killed deer, you needed a room and shovel to pick it up. Took out the front end of a poli e cruiser in the process. All that was left was shit and hamburgee.

The wife and I were just talking about this very thing (ATGATT). We are planning for our anniversary trip and our gear is in sad shape. Her's in minimal and ALL of mine has been down at least once except my helmet.

I just bought new waterproof race boots, 2pc leather suit and gauntlets.

She just got (she's always cold) new non-perferated leather jacket, leather pants, water proof gloves. New boots are on order and should be here early next week.

Glad Chomper turned out ok. I had a friend in our ridding group go down a couple of months ago when he hit a deer. He had just purchased a Seidici 1pc race suit. Not bad for the price. He slid for 100+ feet on pavement and the suit held up well. He did get some very small rash on his hands where his gloves wore through. Previously, he wore a jacket and jeans. That would have been bad in that case.

Thank for the comments guys! have to remember that one if i mow one down in Arkansas

Randy and kingsley were awesome really made the difference. And all the help we were given shows how incredibly giving and friendly our American pals are.
Above all good reminder how vulnerable we are and how important it is to wear good gear.
I guess i get to go bike shopin over the winter
