1985 VF1000R... Getting close...

The best bit is the VFR750 mirrors stick out about an inch or more further than the originals - I can see more than my elbows with them.

I know what you mean about the front signals. I struggled with that myself. I didn't want to use the stock brackets and didn't want to put them on the fairing. I had my old ones on the fairing and hated unplugging and plugging in the signals every time I took the fairing off. I ended up putting some clear lens amarket ones on the stock brackets(can't believe I found them). The clear lens blends in and you don't really notice them when off. At first I wasn't sure I liked them but now I'm fine with them, plus they're bright.

It was the last one you could order from Sudco new. Bought two 4-1s for the CB-1 at the same time. The 1000R was still listed in the catalog, but when I called, the guy said, "I don't think we still... wait... maybe."

 

Arrgh, well, I probably couldn't afford it anyway. Nice find, I may eventually want to make up a custom one.

Got the turn signals figured out... The taillghts are now the brake lights and turn signals, using a trailer converter off of Amazon for about $8.00. I found LEDs that fit the areas where the stock turn signal brackets came out.

 

I was bad somehow and must be punished. Assume the position.


So the 85 is getting new rubber, some adjustments to the front suspension and some braided brake lines. I decided to prep the wheels that came off of the 1986 VF1000R wheel swap bike. They are in good shape (just pretty dirty right now) and I'll mount the new tires to these and be able to swap out.

I've dismounted some older/harder tires before, but that was still not fun.



Now I get to spend some time outside with a toothbrush.

 

4 fucking hours with a few tooth brushes and pretty aggressive wheel cleaner. Cleaning the inner wheel area was a BITCH.



They didn't look bad at first, but the grime was persistent. Not bad for 50K mile original wheels. Now a detail/touch-up and spoon on the new tires.

 

Here's what else I did this weekend.


Disassembled a VF750F and VF700F for the motors and electrics.



The rest got recycled. Saved all hardware too of course. The 750 was ex-race bike. Haven't popped the valve cover yet, but it had hard oil lines plumbed from the tapped main oil gallery. The 700 was a very low mile wreck. I have 2 other VF750F, I don't want any more. One is built (thread here) and one is getting a VF750R treatment at some point.

So nice to gain 2 bikes worth of space.

Decided to refurb the disks and hub that came with these wheels. Detailed wheels with new tires, and everything pre-installed for a swap.



I masked and trimmed out just the disk portions. The grooves and edges, including the outside vents on the rear, all got fresh paint too

 

Man, I love putting on new tires. They almost fall on.



140/80-17 V & 120/80-16 V ContiGO. Great looking tires, nice profiles.



Shot a 45T sprocket to match the rear disk color. Hub is a Graphite Metallic Wheel Paint.



All this to put on some new tires! It was worth it. Another set of restored wheels and way less time with the bike on the lift.

 

I really like that very faint, cartoonish font "ContiGo!" on the sidewalls. Reminds me of the font on the Buell Firebolt tachometers--sort of misplaced and fun.

If you say so. Maybe in relative terms, hah. Slick looking wheels though.

 

Nice, did you just use tire Irons to put the tires on?

Ive always taken mine to a bike shop to get mounted as I expected it to be a PITA to get new tires on the rims
