Update: new fiber clutch plates, new fiber B plate, and all new clutch springs installed. All OEM parts. Put 30 miles on it today going to work and....still slips. In 2nd gear @ about 9k, it surges briefly and immediately goes to redline (and past) and revs as if I'm in neutral, even though I am not. If I let off of it a little and it drops to 7-8k or so, it still pulls and rides fine. I think it's only in 2nd gear. Never saw the neutral light on the dash light up at all.

Is there some way this could be electrical making it cut out like this?

If not, I suppose the next step is to yank the engine and replace the gears in the tranny?

I have that whole gearset from the 3rd gen. everything looked good.

    free + shipping.

Although for the hassle, it might be less headache to swap motors.

Any chance the clutch slave isn't retracting all the way? Grabbing at straws. This is an odd problem and don't see how gears can be bad without grinding and metal shavings.

There is no metal or shavings in the oil at all. I strained it coming out and going in. Nothing left in the pan. No grinding sounds, no clunking, no gearbox noise or vibrations.

How would I be able to tell/fix this if it were the case? The 3rd gen and 4th gen gearsets were the same?

so far as I know. you could check the parts fiche for a better clue. Or take free parts and gamble on the shipping.

However I would do a lot more investigation before splitting cases. And even then I just wouldn't find it worth the hassle. But that's me and I've seen other guys around here who'd rather split a case and rebuild a motor than deal with someone else's sloppy seconds - pun intended.

any chance it's popping out of or not fully in gear? What if you keep pressure on the gear shifter in the up position while running up the throttle?

clean out the spooge in the tiny return orifice hole in the bottom of the clutch master reservoir. It may have a small round shiny metal plate covering this orifice. It is quite small and easily clogged. If it is clogged then the pressure will not be relieved from the slave cylinder and the clutch will slip.

I rode home and when I shifted it into 2nd, I tried to keep it there with my foot, but it made no difference: it gets almost uncontrollably jerky from about 7k on up, alternatively moving forward, grabbing and letting go, and then reving high and going no where, all without touching the lever, and holding steady (not increasing noticeably) the gas. One time the neutral light popped on, I was in neutral (all revs, no forward movement) like I missed a gear, though I'm sure I didn't.

I tried to pull it into 2nd, then keep the shifter up, but all it did was go into 3rd.

When I got home I doubled-checked the tightness of the chain (all good) and noticed the shifter peg, while not rotating on the splined shaft, did have some play in it, so I tightened it up. Will ride tomorrow and see if it made any difference.

huh, seems I have problems with not smooth shifting into 2nd gear at higher revs.
It always goes clunk, event if try to preload shifter. At lower revs it pops way smoother.

Also, under hard acceleration sometimes I miss shift 4th or 5th gear (not sure now), instead gear I get false neutral and revs in red zone.

Anyway, I like mine. Just upgraded forks with CBR600F3 internals. Feels way better.

I swear, I don't get it. I've never missed a shift on this bike...are they not meant to be ridden hard? Am I supposed to ride hard only in 1st, and 3rd-6th? Yeah, I've accelerated hard while in 1st, shifted to 2nd, then accelerated hard to 3rd, and so on....now & then when time/space allows. I thought it was a bike, not a mini-van. What a grand disappointment due only to...riding it like a bike.

I'll check it, but I keep all the fluids nice & clean. Worth a look. It would slip in all gears though, and not just one, right?

should be able to ride it like you stole it and not worry.

If you have not done so yet, like KennyB suggested, clean out the clutch system and completely bleed it out. You should be able to remove the slave cylinder and compress it by hand. Make sure it will operate smoothly.

After that, I would probably remove the cover from the shift linkage and inspect the pins on the end of the shift drum. There is a shift kit available for this model some of the components on the end of the shift drum.

I have not owned it since new, but I bought it from a friend (who bought it new in 94) when he decided motorcycling was not for him for the grand sum of....$300 (long story). He wanted it gone RIGHT NOW to make space in the garage for a Porsche he could race. Anyhow, he put about 15k on it over 10 years or so. I know the guy...he was not hard on it.

I keep all the fluids clean and neat, but it's worth a check. If it's something easy like that I will buy every person on this board a beer. Otherwise, I just rode it into work...and it is damn near unrideable at this point. I can short-shift and only stay in 2nd for a brief time, but otherwise it bucks too much (and too consistently in the same place on tach and in the same gear) to make me think it is anything simple. I can't imagine anything in the reservoir would cause it to be so spot-on in the same place every time, but it's worth a look. I'll report back.

does your license tag have the three numbers 666 in it?

My car has a couple of them in the vin number truthfully. When you look at your drivers license, does it say, "Lucifer." Just throwing this out there, thats all. Would I wana buy a used bike from you? Probabably not. When I look up the term, "flogging the shit outa something" a picture of you on your viffer comes up. Funny thing, I have a 21 year old bike and maybe ran it into the rev limiter a dozen times. Thats just me though, another funny thing was that I recently replaced the entire clutch pack with OEM honda parts. I felt since it had over 70,000 street miles it would be a prudent thing to do. The only difference I did notice was that the bike seemed to have a little more steam over 120 mph. So, I am not coddling my shit mind you, I just dont want to have it cough blood on my watch. Now, other peoples bikes, thats an entirely different story! I would ride em like you

Just think how familar your gona get with your viffer, once you split the cases. What dont kill us makes us stronger right? Dont take it the wrong way, which I know your gona. GLad I am a super-fast typers ....Cheers :drinkers:

Now I'm starting to wonder if I do have that gearset or if I chucked it out with the case

You couldn't anyhow. I don't sell my stuff. Ever. I buy 'em, keep them all and ride 'em all. They break, I fix 'em. Looks like this one is going under the knife probably. Time to shuffle some stuff around in the garage to make room for the table, lift, etc.

Oh, I take the bike to redline alright, but I shift before it hits the limiter and before it sweeps the red zone. And I use the clutch for every shift. And it got me...nowhere, in regards to longevity.

I don't use the rev limiter as a suggestion on when to shift though. I've ridden with guys like that. Too funny. I get out of it before it gets that far, and get into the next gear. But yeah, each gear is usually under load. I'm riding...I'm not in a parade procession. That's what Gold/Old Wings are for.

Based upon your last ride report, It's not gonna be the return orifice -- it'll be rounded off edges on the ends of the 2nd gear dogs.

You might be able to go in with one of those borescopes from HF and inspect it--i think there is an opening behind the clutch basket.

You can weld some metal on the ends to build them back up, then mill it down to get square edges again. You can slightly undercut the sides to help keep the dogs from wanting to jump out.

Even if you use the clutch, but shift fast, you can still beat the dog ends. Once they get some wear they will cam out under high torque load, then eventually wear to the point of camming out even under low torque.

i don't use the clutch to upshift while moving, just put some toe preload on the shift lever, chop the throttle and snick it into gear. All the roadracer guys shift like that both up and down.

    Good luck to you.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness--For me the american dream is to drive and wear out as many fast bikes and cars as i can in my lifetime.

Don't worry about the slowpokes who don't understand the purpose of motorsickles--you obviously do and they are just jealous. Besides if you have to explain it, then they wouldn't understand.

p.s. dont let old ridervfr get to ya--he's been slammin a few beers and gets all poetic, plus he really does want to buy used bikes from ya...

I still don't believe it's a gear problem. If it would stay in gear enough to slip and catch it would make a aweful ratcheting noise from the dogs on the gears jumping from hole to hole. My 2 cents

My 3rd gen jumps completly out of 2nd gear when hard on the gas, time for a gearset !

I would still lean toward the master not releasing pressure as I posted earlier
