Howdy......just got my friends VF1000F running after it sat for 22 years, was checking things out and noticed a small switch on the right lower inside of the fairing. It is labelled "Fog Lights". Pulled the switch to on and WTF, the rad fan turns on. This is with the ignition on but bike not running. Did someone add this switch so that the rad fans can be turned on at will?. Do these bikes get so hot that this is needed? There's no freaking fog lights on this bike.....What am I missing here? Thanks...

It's VERY common for the thermoswitches to fail, so it's also common to fit a manual over-ride switch, and that's what he has.

Thanks.....I figured that's what someone did. Right now it's running on the cool side as in my other post. What are the thermo switches, where are they and what do they do?

I am just about done with the old girl, waiting for a new rear tire that's back ordered. There's only 14K on this bike, it's in really nice shape. I have put about 80 kilometers on it so far test riding it. It sounds good, runs great, smooth acceleration, she's alive and well!!!!. A few minor issues to be still resolved.

Located on the left side of the radiator, one wire hooked up, senses coolant temp and sends power to the fan when temp exceeds 212F............if it's working right.

It works since the fans do come on when it hits a certain temp.

guess I'm not so sure about sensor failures....

but the V4 runs hot in traffic and slow speeds. People like to wire a fan switch to manual kick on the fan well before 212deg to keep lower temps. Once the temps get into the 210/220 range, it's tough to cool it back down without getting moving in clean air. Kicking the fan on around 190 helps a lot according to folks who've done the mod.
