Need some technician help. I have a 1987 VFR700. When I turn the ignition key on, the headlamp comes on as normal. Upon starting the bike, the headlamp goes out and does not come back on. I have replaced the bulb one time. The second time the problem occurred, I checked for power at the headlamp plug...no power. Checked the fuse..fuse is good. Checked the handlebar switch coupler..good connection.

My question is....Is there a solenoid or switch that temporarily cuts power to the headlamp when the starter circuit is cranking? If so, what and where is the switch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Starter switch

Start button is designed to cut headlight power momentarily and has 2 contact sets within, one for power to starter solenoid and the other (blue-white/blue wires)for headlight, so you need to carefully disassemble switch housing and inspect wires for solder breaks or contacts for damage, corrosion, etc.

Don't loose the small springs or ball, and work in a very well-lighted area.

Ok, I'll check the contacts. Oddly enough, I just plugged the headlamp back in and started the bike, now I have a low beam light, but no high beam (and indicator does not light when switched to high beam.) must be a contact problem. Thank you for the advice.

I have had this problem on both the VF`s I have owned. The little plastic "hinge" for the starter button was broken. I Just took it a part and removed the little broken bit and cleaned the contact points. No problems after that.

I replaced the starter switch with a factory part. Works like a charm. I want to thank everyone for the excellent advise.

What factory part did you use to fix this?
