I went for an early morning ride today. Put on about 200 miles of the curviest roads I could find. Sure does clear the mind don't it. I can't see giving up riding on the street. Maybe a dirt bike to go along with a street bike but I sure would miss those Sunday morning rides. But anyways. This morning those fears and what ifs are still there but not enough to make me stay at the speed limit or to want to give it up. Maybe its my confidence in my riding or my nerve?

Taylor, if you have never done a trackday you have no idea what you are missing. Back in 2007 I did my firsttrackday. After the first day I was hooked. You want to go fast and really learn how to do it right? Do a trackdays. You want to ride fast and not worry about johnny law and dumbass drivers? Do trackdays. You worried about all those trees in the corners if you came off the road? Guess what, aint no trees in the corners at the track.

You live near one of the best tracks in the universe, Barber. Go to Motorcycle Track Days | NESBA. They run at Barber and are a top notch trackday org.

Oh, and if you think you are fast or a fast rider...you arnt. Do a trackday and you'll see what I mean.

Barber is a bucket list track for me. I really want to ride it on the two stroke I ride.

    Any questions let me know.

Nick just finished a riders clinic at Sportbike Northwest. The clinic is held on the Maryhill Loops Road near Stevenson,WA on the Columbia river. The Pace is as valid today as it was when first published. The Maryhill Loops Road is a great training area and one of the highlights of the clinic is to see just how fast a fast guy is when in an off the street venue.

    Ain't that the truth!

But a couple of the big-uns own the local Kawi shop and threw a lot of money toward the local NYPUM organization that this ride was fundraising for. So I'll give 'em a pass.

Thanks again for the advice. I checked out nesba and I'm going to read the pace. Have always meant to read that. I don't know if I can swing 205 bucks for a day on the track very often. But it would be awesome to do it. I sure like the idea of no cars or trees etc... think I will plan to go down to barber on the 25th or 26th and check it out. Pretty bad I live this close, about 2hours away, and have never been there. I have really been wanting to see that museum also. Have been to laguna seca before. Remember watching doug polen play with scott russell. It was surely awesome the speeds they were going. At first sight I thought there was no way the tires were going to stick at the speeds they were entering the corners. To think the moto gp guys were even faster? Is there not a cheaper way onto the tracks? Like a streetbike day or something?

Trackdays are 'street bike days'. Thats what most riders take are their streetbikes as that is what they were intended to do. To let sportbike riders open up their machines with on track coaches who help teach you how to go fast.

The only thing I can suggest is go down to Barber and see if any other trackday orgs run on it for a bit less if pennies are that tight for you. But I have to say, 205 bucks sounds liek alot, until you do a track day. Dude, its a bargain at that price.

Lets put a little perspective on this. You like to roll on public roads were the risks are always higher. I don't know what speeds you are doing, but ask yourself how much a ticket would be from jonny law and the increaded insurance premiums if applicable. Most decent sized speeding tickets are at least 150-200 bucks in Delaware. Hell, there is your first track day taht you pissed away.

How about the cost of crashing on the street vs. the cost of a track day? Probably more than 200 bucks...if you walk away from it.

Lastly, I have yet to see a track day newbie say "Man, I wasted 200 bucks today!" Instead its, "HOLY SHIT WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO DO THIS!!?!?!?!?!?!?"

Once you take a hit of the 'track pipe' it all becomes clear ;-)

    Forgot to add:

Taylor, you don't have to do track days every week LOL! A few a year are what many do to sharpen their skills and to get that balls out riding out of thei rsystem. The reality is, most street riders 'think' they have gone fast. Its not until they learn to go fast on the track that they really were not fast on the street and the street cant offer the speed and safetly the track can/ does, so they keep that kind of pace in its rightful spot.

Well I read the pace( its also in the (100aniversary motorcyclist mag) and gave it a try on a familiar road. It is fun, but I still enjoy trailing the brakes into the corners some. I will have to keep trying it some more because it is a challenge to set your corner speed and then not touch the brakes. It was kinda fun too. Something different.

Ya might try downshifting too. Also, consider those track days at most tracks include safety checks by qualified dudes, ambulance service and experienced riders who can spot bad habits real quick. Maybe look up Nick who was one of the real fast guys in his day and set the pace that few could keep up with.

Track days will really sharpen your skills. The big plus at the track is plenty of run off room and MEDICAL is there. No waiting if you get hurt. Laying out in a field or woods on the local back roads may take days to find your body. Remember decomposition stinks.

Your skills should be sharpened at the track and not the street. Then when you go out on the street where you can run lets say 80% of track speeds/cornering and be pretty safe. 50% of going fast is mental!! Let me repeat MENTAL. No matter how good you are, if your mind is not close to 100% focused on your surroundings and what you are doing your skills are not going to save you for the most part. But when it all comes together it's a really great feeling of freedom and flight. Very similar to flying.

Be smart about it and you can become an old fast rider.

You put it real good grey. I can look back to my many dirt bike crashes and blame my lack of focus on them. One of my worst crashes (in the dirt) was just putting around in the yard goofing off. Had I been going real fast and focused I never would have crashed. Thank god my focus is almost always 100% on the road. I would like to say always but I would be lying if a girl in a bikini or what not will always distract me.

I rearended a minivan back when I was in my early 20's because I was distracted checking out some hot chick going the other way.

Cost me about $1800 if I recall.
