Damn if your panties aren't all in a bunch - all because I sometimes ride in T-shirt. I don't think badbilly needs you to stick up for him, I'm assuming he's a big boy, not some pimply-faced twelve year old switching between posting and jacking off in his moms basement.

You mental midgets still need to go back and see that my point is that most riders don't do the ATGATT thing, and how you ride is how to tell a squid, not what what you're wearing. 120mph on the street with a chick on the back - that's your poster girl for ATGATT - how about slowing the fuck down? IF you're so concerned about new riders, how about losing the "I'm faster than you attitude"?

I'll continue to take my chances running down to get a burger in jeans and a T.

Maybe somebody swapped xr's gerbil for a baby porcupine and that's the reason he is so pissed off.

On the burgers, if you have to have a big mac, at least go inside. Burger munching at or below the ton can cause sticky stuff on the throttle.

Better yet, for those unfamiliar with Seattle and if in need of a burger, BB says go to Kidd Valley..

You sure do know a lot about small mammals, chinchillas and all that. Extensive first hand research I presume.

No Kidd Valley's on the north end. Burgermaster.

and FWIW, I didn't start this pissing match with the "we todd" and "out of the closet" comments. You numbnuts sure do get bitchy when someone talks back.

Go douche the sand out of your clit.

    XR,

You must not have been really reading anyone's posts. No one has said that wearing the right gear will save a rider (especially from stupid riding). Don't know if it would have made a significant improvement in Brittany Morrow's life - maybe she would have tumbled more and broken her neck. Maybe she would have just had a bunch of bruises. Don't know about that - no one does.
As an inexperienced passenger, she bears little responsibility for what happened to her, she trusted her friend, and was ignorant of the risks and consequences, she had no power to influence the idiot "pilot" of the bike once she got on as pillion.
It was just wrong for you to disparage the young lady for those events. Her courage since the incident has been inspiring. I would venture a guess that she doesn't ride down the street w/o her gear. I doubt you would either, if you had her experience - but I could be wrong.

I'm sure some of the other responses on the board were a humorous attempt to address the humorless and crass manner in which you posted your first response. Your poor command of language and demonstration of poor self control has been manifest throughout this thread.

All anyone has indicated here is that a jacket, riding pants, boots and gloves reduce the severity and likelihood of road rash, and with armor, they may reduce bruising and breakage.
A proper helmet reduces the chance for TBI and/or facial injuries. That's It.
All of this "stuff" (we call riding gear) is less likely to matter if someone rides like an idiot.
Riding smart is always the first line of defense - NO experienced and intelligent rider would ever disagree with that.

:soapbox: FWIW - I'm probably casting pearls. :flypig:

I would still rather sweat than bleed, and I do it with a big grin on my face most of the time (traffic permitting).

What you wear (or don't wear) is your decision - no one has said anything different.

Here is my take on ATGATT, I have had my share of Road-Rash, & have Cheated Death!
If I had been wearing riding gear, I may have limped away or been killed? The injuries I had were because of my decition to not wear any gear, & I blamed no-body but myself for those injuries.
BUT, I have made the choice to start wear riding gear. Will I do ATGATT?
Like someone else stated MOTGMOTT is most likely where I will be!
Helmet & Jacket will always be worn, & depending on how I like riding pants? I will wear them as well. The rest will be dependent on the riding I plan to be doing.
No-one can force others to wear what isn't required by law to wear, Hell! seatbelts are law, but look at the People & their Kids that are not using them!
The choice has to be their's to make, just as what happens as a consiquence is ultimiatly their's!
Truethfully, I have little sympathy for the young-lady that got hurt, But Glad she is doing well & back on a bike & doing something positive with her life & the poor choices she made in the past that got her there!

So far, & to the best of my knowlege, the only requirement for being on this forum is the love of Motorcycles ( mainly VFR's )!
So why are People getting upset with each other because of what they choose to wear or not wear?

    RIDE SAFE!

Indeed I do know more about vertibrates than invertibrates with the exception of many squid encounters.

Burgermaster is good. What is your take on Dicks, a little North of Ballard.

Being in the closet is a state of mind. Wetodd is the lack therof. I can neither apologize for or justify for the other dudes for beating you to the punch on both issues.

Numbnuts and clits all in the same post? A Freudian field day!

my heated grips keep the burger warm

Crusty's just happy that Billy's zero'd in on someone else for a change

Yesterday I passed through an intersection of two state highways. Waiting at the light was your stereotypical grungy Harley clown with middle age woman on the back in shorts, tank, and flops I think. The double take happened when I noticed sandwiched between the two was an approximately 7 year old girl dressed like the woman behind her except she didn't even have flip-flops. None of the three had helmets of course. Hopefully a cop found them.

I know we used to putt around the neighborhood as kids behind dad back in the day. But none of the "dad's" I knew back then were dumb enough to take kids out into traffic.

I went for a 300mi road trip yesterday (Warrenton, VA to Seneca rocks WV, and back) it was 97degF during the hottest part. While stopped in Harrisonburg I was approached by a woman who stated "why you wearing so much gear in this heat?" "I know cause my Boyfriend has a bike."
    My reply:
It's not so bad while moving...
To add to this my friend dropped his Buell 2x yesterday going downhill on the Rte33 twisties. He had on helmet, jacket, gloves and Jeans. Luckily he is ok after both as they were 30mph drops in the gravel (went too wide). The gear definitely helped, protecting him form any road rash and head injury.

I have always worn my Helmet, jacket, gloves, jeans, and boots. I now also add the mesh Olympia armored pants. I wear shorts underneath and was just fine during this hot as hell day.
I wont sacrifice comfort for protection...though I was just fine.

Pictures like the road rash queen's definitely put this sort of thing in perspective.

It's hard to preach ATGATT when you have states the repeal helmet laws like PA did in 2003. Operating any vehicle on a public roadway is a privilege not a right, and it makes no sense you can be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt but can legally not wear a helmet.
As for me, I always wear a helmet, good gloves, and an armored mesh or armored textile jacket depending on the temps. Besides, getting hit with bugs and rocks at highway speeds isn't fun either.
Coming home from Vintage Bike Days at Mid Ohio last week I saw countess riders and women passengers doing the flip flops shorts and t-shirt thing. All were passing us around 75-80mph. Do I laugh at them? Yes. Do I hope the eat it? No. I'm not a terrible person and riders who wreck without helmets and gear only contribute to rising insurance and medical costs. It is not hard these days to rack up a million dollars in medical bills.
That said, this forum shouldn't be about berating a member who chooses to gear down. I go on group rides with an older rider who's ridden all his life who only wears gloves and an open face helmet. Any time we straddle our bike and leave the driveway there is a risk of accident. We already assume a lot of risk regardless of the gear that is worn. But there is a big difference in respecting risk and willfully ignoring it.
    Off soap box.

I was in Central and Southwestern Ohio a couple of weeks ago, and was really suprised at the sheer numbers of riders w/o helmets on Ohio roads. When I lived in Ohio, I always wore appropriate gear while riding, including a good full face helmet - I seemed to remember most riders wearing helmets - that has now very obviously changed. How long ago did Ohio repeal it's helmet law?

    :soapbox:

I rode to work 3 days this week in 95+ temps - geared up, even after working out. Sweated a little while riding, but that's better than the two alternatives - not riding or bleeding because of contact with the pavement in an accident.

Saw a guy on a 'busa on High Street in Columbus acting like an idiot - traffic lights were still out from the big storm. Of course, he was waring shorts, tank top and athletic shoes - and no helmet.

Well, for part 1 of your post, its not hard to preach. Saying the government knows what's good for us is an oxymormon. Hypocrisy is at its finest with the government. (Exactly as you say - wear a seatbelt but not a helmet)? That's why it comes down to using your head (no pun intended).

For part 2: I don't think we berate people that don't wear gear. But I would berate somebody that DEFENDS not wearing gear.

We can make the argument all day long about how our insurance costs go up for those riders with no gear that crash. We could also make that argument about damn near everything, so its really a no win situation. But to come on a bike forum and defend why its fun to not wear gear? C'mon....

Better to be berated than derated IMO.

Helmet laws are partially determined by who spends the most money on lobbyists. the HD and HD clone crowd and PI lawyers, or the helmet manufacturers crowd who could really take a lesson from the former to get thier shit together.

    Just my 2 cents here...

I friend of mine left work for a quick trip to grab a Slurpee and had some Gomer turn in front of him.
He was wearing gloves, a helment, and a riding jacket.
Even though he was only going about 35 mph he ended up with two broken wrists, a broken clavicle (I think) and a trashed bike... but he lived to tell about it.

I went on an off road excursion at about 85 mph with full gear to miss another bike. Not sure how much speed I bled off before intentionally dumping the bike on it's side to avoid going in the river but I was still going pretty fast.
I ended up with a scraped up helmet, scraped up riding glove, a small tear in my leather jacket, imprints from the stiching of my leathers imprinted into my shoulder, a hole through the knee pad of my riding pants, a wound about the size of a nickel on my left knee and a huge bruise on my left leg. We were able to use zip ties to attach my left fairing to the bike (it wasn't bad, it landed on my leg) and I was able to ride 50+ miles home.
My leg hurt like hell from the impact with the ground so I took an Ibuprofen and I needed a Bandaid for my knee but I was in pretty good shape. I had to visit the ER a few days later to have some blood drained from between skin layers but that was the worst of it.
If I hadn't worn a helmet I would have lost most or all of the skin from just in front of my left ear to the center of my forehead, I would have probably damaged or lost my left eye and without the rest of the riding hear... well it was gravel so it wouldn't have been fun.

If you want to ride without gear, fine, I believe people should have the right to make stupid choices.
But I will not feel sorry for you when you need skin grafts or worse.

Riding gear actually saves me all the time from all kinds of pain! I had only a 8 day plate to try out my 06 800vfr and I am not a new rider to bikes that tip over easy as my last one was top heavy too-2002 R6 Yamaha. I was making a sharp turn in a blind spot for cars and wasn't in the right gear and stalled the bike and went down on my right foot I used for a slider. I had a big racing boot on and it saved me from a broken foot. I have R+G sliders now so my foot won't get crushed again in a slow fall. I am molding the bike to make it easy to ride. I have new tires M5 to put on ,I added tank pads, cut the stock seat down a inch-going to get sargent seat too and have new adj folding levers to put on . Going to add a light weight slip-on for sure and Golden Scott hydro like steering damper -I am not going to ride it again till it s up to my specs. I put 30,000 miles on my last bike!:potstir::tongue2::smash:

What size are you? I frequent the D-Store here in OC and sometimes they have really great deals on stuff. I've seen stuff go for 50% off. I bought myself and my wife jackets last year that were at least 50% for one of them. Not saying they'll have them, just saying I'll check for ya.
