    Hey all,

Im Billie 25 from the lovely and wet Essex, UK..

Been biking on L plates on my trusty 09 CBF 125, and with my test booked for next week had to go get me a new bike.

Now im a dab hand at mechanics, working on cars since I passed my test in 06, and have a lovley Mk6 ford escort rs2000 as my toy but caught the biking bug 2 years back.

due to cash only just got round to my full test so cant wait to get on a bigger bike..

now the story behind me buying this is quite something.

friend at work said he was selling his vfr 400 as had been layed up nearly a year with some minor work needed doing to it and at £300 it was worth a punt even if i couldnt get it road worthy could at least break it and sell it for parts..

however a email recieved yesterday from him said he made an error as he HAD a 400, and what actually has got is a 750.. still for £300.. result if i dont say so myself..

so going to pick it up next week around my test dates when i got use of my uncles van..

now i know im taking a risk seeing i havent even seen the bike yet and not sure what it may suprise me with but at £300 i couldnt really pass up on the bargain..

if bought and repaired crashed cars, so a bike thats been sat for a while un crashed cant be that big a risk.

cant wait to get my hands on it and get it going :D

-- dont worry ill get photos up as soon as i got it and through the build --

anything i should look out for regarding it being sat, and any inherrent problems with the 750's ?

    cheers

    Billie

    Welcome :yo:

I am going to assume she is a 2nd. or 3rd. gen bike, as such the condition of Petrol Tank, Carby's, Battery & Tyres are what I would be cautious about, because of age & how long she has been sitting. I would recommend changing all fluids.

My plan was a full service (oil plugs filters), and obviously drain the tank and fresh fuel.. going to check the carbs, have had a read around the site so got a rough idea what to do.. im hoping he remembered to drain them before parking it up..

its got some faring damaged where it was knocked over when stationary so obviously going look at the cosmetics and probable paint job,

my main unsurity is best way to clean the tank out but a bit more reading i should be there :)

You will want to inspect for rust, & possible rust out on the lower edges of tank ( Paint will be bubbling in the area if so ).

Also make sure you Post up some pics of her when you get her home!
    Cheers, & Ride Safe.

If there is rust in the tank there are ways to DIY. I had a problem a while back with rust in my tank. I pulled the tank off, put 1 gallon of hot water in it, put in about 1000 BB's, rotated until I got tired, drained water (left BB's in), repeated about 10 times. I know, it's exhausting. After that, removed all water and BB's, used about a gallon of alcohol (not the drinking kind) and swished it around inside for about 5 min. Drained alcohol, then let air dry. Next was a tank sealant from a local tractor dealer specific for ethanol fuels. Let that dry. Replaced new pet cock and filter assembly. That was about 2 years ago and no issues since. Process took about 4 days or so, but well worth the effort. If you don't want to DIY, then you can always bring it somewhere, but it's gonna cost you....maybe alot.
Also, I think you are on the right track with what maintenance you have planned, but I think what Apittslife is saying by ALL FLUIDS is don't forget about the brake and clutch fluids, and coolant. You can never go wrong with all fresh fluids on a used bike that you just purchased. This way you are starting with a known condition, vice one that been sitting.
As far as the plastics, if there is damage, then you can always us something called PlastiFix. Here is the link: PlastiFix Kit (White) | PlastiFix Kits. I've used it a little and it works well for some of the minor cracks, broken tabs, etc. If you need a whole new fairing, then e-bay is probably your best bet.

Good luck, and post pics when you get a chance.

Welcome to the zoo lad! As long as the frame is straight and you take care of everything mentioned above, you can't go wrong with a VFR.

not as good as the mussies ;)

when doing the service noticed a few other issues with mountings and such, and could do with new rubber but will just get it through MOT.

part one of the UK test done with 0 minors just gotta do the 2nd part on the 14th and ill be able to ride her :D
