My wife was doing a VERY slow U turn. Dropped the bike and bent the shift lever. Now I cannot shift into fourth.

Anyone with ideas. Really too bad because the two of us were to join 7 other riders on Saturday and it looks like she cannot go now. One first LONG ride together.

Anyone ideas on why I cant shift. Something inside?

PS: This is whilst stationary. I assume that makes no difference

OK what VFR are we talking about? Is it one of the 7thGen models with the latest semi-automatic gear select? If so, I really would not know where to start - apart from taking it straight around to the dealer.

On a conventional gear select box, its possible the drop has not just bent the shift lever but may have caused damage inside the gearbox. I assume you have now carefully bent the gear select lever back to roughly its original location. In which case it should be sufficiently clear of the rest of the bike/frame to allow you to move up and down the whole gearbox normally. Hence I suspect something else has been damaged by the drop.

Is there any chance the clutch lever was also bent/twisted around preventing it fully disengaging - as this could make gear selection difficult? Again this might be resolved by very careful straightening in a well padded vice. If you are not sure, its worth putting the bike on the centre stand, standing in front of the bike and comparing the position/shape of the brake and clutch levers - they should be symmetrical. Just be very careful as the motorbike levers ends are designed to breakoff in a crash and can easily snap off whilst you try to straighten things up.

If the clutch is working normally then I think its time to visit the dealer, as opening up a sequential gearbox is best left to experts.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Don't be an ass.. stationary test is useless.

The rear wheel has to spin the countershaft so that the gear dogs can line up to shift gears. 4th is on the same shift fork as 3rd in many bikes, but you didn't say what year and model.

When a bike goes over, sometimes air gets introduced into the clutch (or brake) hydraulics, requiring a bit of bleeding to repair.

Is the shift lever stuck and won't travel into gear or is it traveling the length of the throw and getting nothing?

    Put bike on center stand
    Put transmission in neutral
    Start bike
    Shift into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
If it seems to shift properly, go ride it
If it fails to shift properly, take it to your mechanic

I second this. You probably bent a linkage and it wont travel normally.I suggest very slowly shift up and see where it rubs/stuck .

My wife would have shot herself or moved to another planet just to avoid a life of my bitching and funny ass sarcastic comments that would never get old for me or any of my friends.

    Was the problem resolved?
If it was, what was the solution?
