So my recently purchased 2000 VFR has been fantastic but all the talk and info on the charging system has me checking everything, lol.

The guy I bought it from said he recently put in a new battery and it seems fine but if I leave it on a battery tender until the light goes green, the max resting voltage is 12.5x. I have checked the reg and all is well there and after riding around for an hour and half, the resting voltage is anywhere between 12.2v and 12.4v. Normal or is that signs of a weak battery? Idle voltage is 13.1 and at 5000 it is at 14.1....no running or starting issues whatsoever.

Sounds about right to me. Really need to put a load on the battery to test it properly.

Agreed - they are close enough. Technically, the battery at rest should be at 12.8 to 13.2 once fully charged, since each of the 6 cells holds about 2.1 to 2.2 volts.

To me, the important thing is that once she's fired up the reading stay true and don't fluctuate. Ride on.

Weather has been brutal. We've been in the high 90's to low 100's here in Jersey. I normally don't ride when its that hot, to be honest. Even when I was puttin along at 45mph my bike temps were 210 to 220. I'm normally at 195 or so!

    Bring on a cold spell!

CR fan, I'm a few hours to the west, so I know that same heat. I've been watching my bike collect dust in the garage lately as well.

And, as long as the bike starts and runs fine, with that battery, keep going. Maybe swap it out come next spring if you are worried about it.

Yeah, just gonna ride it and have fun. Glad I swapped the coolant out for some engine ice too, hehe. Gonna ride a bit tonight in the evening I think cause I just can't stand having a new bike and watching it sit

It's even hot up here in Canada! We have been flirting with high 90s for what seems forever. The good part being that I don't have to cut the grass. The bad part is that it is all but dead! The lakes are low, the rivers are low and for some reason the gas prices are low too.?!

Where is Karen? She lives in Vegas. I think she'd give Texans a good run for the heat.

Hey all...on the power issue...I have noticed significant loss of batt power recently if I have to crank the bike more than once to start it. I replaced sparks and the bike starts right up (it stays on a trickle charger) on the first crank. However, bike wouldn't start yest after a stall (I had been riding about 30 mins), it labored to turn over once but that was it. Lights and ignition lighs all fine, no dimming. I can hear the fuel pump. I'm showing about 11.6-11.8v on the removed battery. Does that mean it's a goner? Like I said, I use a Batt Tender...but only had the bike for 6 weeks or so.

When I experienced similar issues it was the regulator rectifier that was the culprit. The problem was that it worked fine when cold but would fail after about thirty minutes of riding. I had no indication that there was aproblem till it just quit. I experienced the same poor starting for a few weeks leading up to the final failure. If I tested it when everything was hot, the voltage was about 11, when cold it was 14. So if I just did short rides, all was well!

If your R/R is undercharging be careful because once your voltage drops too low you lose your FI and you're broken down.
From your posts in July it sounded like you were on the low side of things and now it's gotten worse. You should be at 14.4 around 5krpms.

When I tested it this morning the battery was cold...and it was still below 12V, around 11.6-11.7.

Was this with the engine running?

If so, your charging system isn't working which could be the RR or the Stator or a combination of the two. As Durk has said, better get her fixed before she leaves you stranded on some lonesome highway.

No this was the battery OUT of the bike. I have read where slowly losing power can be the sign of a bad cell/bad battery...and it "feels" like there's not enough amperage when starting it (before I replaced the plugs, the power would go from cranking to barely turning over just given 2 or 3 'cranks'). I have seen some web chatter to that effect...so I have a recommended-on-this-site Yuasa on the way, which will replace my BatteriesPlus suspect unit. I have also seen that a bad battery can show fully charged and then lose power quickly... I will do the R/R checks as soon as I have some reliable power running through the system...
