I have looked at getting a KN airfilter for my bike, I have them on all my other vehicles and have been very happy with them. That being said am I going to have to re-jet the bike if I start tinkering like this? I am in Colorado so I am 5-6K altitude. Thanks for any help!

OEM airfilter is best. K&N must service every month. intake valve clearances go to zero. same than lapping valves.... Honda S-Manager Rautsi

Guess I am a little lost? The K&Ns on my cars go for quite some time before needing cleaned and reoiled. Are you saying somehow that a KN filter will screw up the valves???

IMO, maybe.. but not because of the install of a K&N filter. "Tink" is good on Colorado and carbs. Tell him you like yellow bikes and he will help you..;)

The biggie on carbs is unless in some adverse climate or altitude is keeping them synched.

Yes, you don't need to buy a "jet kit". You can use the mixture screws to adjust the fuel if you need it. Since the KN is more restrictive than the oem filter you will likely need less fuel, unless you like buying more gas than you need. Since you are at a high elevation you will need less fuel overall, and i would guess that a previous owner has already drilled out the covers for you. Measure your fuel economy before and after and report it back when you install the filter.

Here in the notes is an indication about the KN restriction,
    http://www.factorypro.com/prod_pages/prodh42.html

i think it was on vfrd that they measured the opening area dimensions into the plenum and found them smaller than stock.

If you can't lean it out enough with the mixture screws then you will need a smaller pilot jet, ~$8 each.

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanic...-slides-avoid-buying-jet-kits-drill-bits.html

    i don't sell anything.

i don't know why the valve clearances would get smaller unless dirt, sand and grit was being pulled through the intake and "lapping" the valves, but i would be interested to investigate that claim.

Interesting. I had heard about the K&N opening area being smaller. Didn't realize they were actually restrictive.

Any info on the UNI filters for these bikes?

Restrictive is a relative term. I know some harleydoods that punch holes in thier aircleaners to solve that problem or they just get chrome doo-dads for their carbs and wait until there is so so much crud on the valve seats only about two grand will fix it.

A bit of a stretch but partially true..

I installed an Hrc Jet kit on my 1995 VFR..also the K&N, and with those i removed the baffle from my StayInTune Pipe and the snorkel from the airbox...Very nice power increase, total of like 250$. Just had an electrical issue and solved the R/R problem with the purchase of a Mosfet unit..have to suggest this to anyone without..Roadstercycle.com, actually spoke to the guy and he was very helpful and friendly and said he would be assembling it for shipping that night and i had it in 2 days, better than new now..:vtr2:

I think I will just stick with OEM then. The bike has always been serviced by the dealer syncing carbs etc. I doubt there have been any real mods made to it at all. If the KN is restrictive lol Ill just stick with OEM. The filter isn't even dirty just thought I might add some power never mind.

    I've put 3 K&N's in vehicles: a 2008 Corolla, a 2006 Ninja 500R and an SV650
    • The Corolla seems to have more get up and go, but it could be that I drive my Corolla like it's a motorcycle
    • The Ninja suffocated big time; I put the OEM back in... definite hit to performance
    • There's no noticable difference in the SV's performance, but it eats more gas
IMHO, K&N filters aren't what they're cracked up to be. FWIW, the Ninja filter came pre-oiled; I had to oil the other two myself and they were less awful. Perhaps I under-oiled them and my engine is eating shit as a result. I hear the mass air sensor is not fond of an over-oiled K&N.

The OEM paper filter is the best bet. I do not care for the K&N filters. They will pass way to much for my comfort. In an offroad vehicle it is a death sentence. My two pennies.

I've pondered getting a K&N for my bike but I'd rather have good air filtration then an extra couple ponies.

I want the air filter to keep crap outta my carbs

So are all K&N filters bad news or just the ones for VFRs with carbs? Got two on my BMW, one on my SR500 another one on my cage and one on the now world famous mach 1 91 that has been on there for about ten years. No wonder it's so fast.

Damn, I sure hope the harleydoods don't catch on to this horsepony increase, next thing ya know they will be keeping up with even the old farts here.

Naw the harleydoods all have that open exhaust straight pipes thing going on (1930's tractor technology?)--i'm sure they have that horsepower thing all figured out by now...

    Monkey see, monkey do.

With the K&N cone on my cage I have to clean the MAF wires once a year. (usually after winter)

I've since added a K&N bag over the cone which helped.
