Do as you wish lad, the laws of probability will catch up with you eventually when you're out there having 'fun'.

That's just a little disingenuous. :bs: No reasonable rider would be inclined to say that ATGATT is about riding with leathers while out on the dunes. :der: We are talking about the street and track - mostly the street, since the rules of the track take care of things.

I would hardly call MSF instructors and AMA or WERA racers Posers, and the ones I know - based on behavior and discussions (Racers and MSF instructors) would, for the most part choose to wear helmet, gloves, jeans or armored riding jeans or riding pants, riding jacket and boots on a trip to a nearby store. A couple of AMA pro/WERA racers I knew in Ohio were so freaked out about riding on the street (way too uncontrolled an environment), they only rode in leathers (I'll qualify - not necessarily the racing ones) - even for short trips.

There were 3 groups riding in at bike night, Harley/cruiser riders, experienced, serious riders in gear, and squiddies.

I used to ride my KZ in Ohio on a 100 mile commute (50 each way), and following the smart riders I knew there, I always wore my gear - leather riding jacket, jeans, gloves, helmet and boots, even to the corner convenience store. I now live in Georgia, and it's a lot hotter on the average here than it is in Washington (or Ohio) - I always wear my gear, and wow, suprise, I still have fun riding. It takes me what, 2 minutes to go from shorts and a t-shirt to boots, jeans, jacket, helmet and gloves.

Again, do what you wish.... I'm just saying it's a bad idea to be an advocate for making poor choices. I truly hope you don't have to experience either taking advantage of your riding gear during your commute, or the ER when you don't. :crutch:

My brother went for a "quick run" to the store in his t-shirt and jeans. Later that day, my mother had the pleasure of going to the hospital and watching as a nurse scrubbed the gravel out of his hip and arm. He has the scars to this day.

I wear a leather jacket, full face helmet and gloves every time I am on my bike. Don't care if it's 55 or 105 outside. If you think that makes me look like a poser, then you are truly a fool and I hope no one will have to worry or care about you if you go down.

I don't have a problem if one chooses not to wear gear per se. What I have a problem with is that when you come into my ICU I have to keep your dumb ass alive no matter the cost and your insurance is not going to pay a fraction of the cost (and that's assuming you have insurance). Those organs could go to someone in need who has a brain that's not going to be damaged for the rest of their lives.

The hospital bill of even a minor brain injury is over 100K, if you are lucky enough to NOT get a head injury and only end up with fractures and skin grafts, you are still looking at multiple thousands. Most people who preach against gear choose to wear minimal gear, pseudo helmets, and have little to no insurance, then they want the best medical care and rarely ever pay. We are talking billions of dollars a year that drive the costs up for those of us who do wear gear, pay our taxes and insurance.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't give a damn if someone chooses not to wear gear and/or a helmet, but they should be required to be organ donors or at least give up their right to medical care that they won't pay for and their right to choose to live on machines for extended periods due to their own stupidity.

Damn Billy, your ability to choose the most poignant words to capture the humor of the moment is awe inspiring. :pound:

..... But the visual Jose added made me feel just a little ill. :yuck: :puke:

Reg, :reg: you hit the nail on head - a good friend is an ER nurse, and she feels the same way.

Persoanally I'm a MOTGATT, Most Of The Gear All of The Time, this means at a minimum gloves, jacket, boots helmet (always a full face or modular). Where I fluctuate is on the leg covering. When going to job sites I typically wear street clothes, although I don't find it unrealistic, I do find that it's easier/cooler (as in temperature) to wear
my Bohn adventure pants under my street clothes, rather than the kind of protection that goes over street clothing. I just find it quicker and easier to manage the gear when I arrive, as my storage space on the bike is limited right now. What I find unrealistic is thinking that I am just as safe with this type of setup. But that is the "risk management" I take and if anything were to happen to me, I will accecpt that as being what I get for not wearing full protection.

That being said, if I am doing any type of "spirited" riding I put on my leathers, especially if I am following JTC, that guy is fast! If I look like "Ricky Racer" or a poser, so be it, I'd rather be posing in a full set of leathers than a full body cast. As far as spending money on safety gear, I don't think that it's unrealistic to have to buy the proper gear before riding. In fact I own at least three types of suits, two 2 piece leather suits, one vented the other not, and a 2 piece textile setup. I bought all of these items over the course of a year and done it without breaking the bank, as I found all of them hunting for deals. All total I spent less than $2000.00 for all three suits. I also have three pairs of boots for the different riding "environments". I have two full length boots one vented, one non and a pair of low cut above the ankle boots I wear during my work days or just running errands. Even just running to the store I'm MOTGATT, again the leg coverings is where I lack the better protection and I think that is being realistic.

Awe Shucks.. ;) Folks are gonna wear what they wear; they are going to fall off, crash, get FUBAR and die. Punching in messages at 100mph on a bike is just asking for it. Justifying it? Eeeeek!

I guess I missed Jose's visual. Probably for the best. I'm sure there will be additions like dragging on the ground. Not everyone of course.. Only the fortunate few.

You and Reg are spot on. A couple of Docs in my club and some Seattle FD EMTs, A few LEOS, and one shrink. All say the same thing basically.

    Maybe, maybe not.

The op was just lucky that at 120 mph they didn't hit anything, b/c all that would've been left is a smudge and a smear, :censored:

Don't bother with the PM's just post your smack talk here.

I went to Motorcyle SuperStore, Over in louisville today, & I bought a really nice ( But Damb Heavy ) Cortech riding jacket ( Fits nice though ).
Paid $97.00 for it with a 30% discount for fathers-day sale. :thumb: It's going to be a Be-iych wearing it thru the summer, But when it gets cool it will be nice. May have to look for something better suited for hot & humid weather?
Now I have to get a pair of Riding-Gloves & a pair of Riding-Boots, What they had on hand was too-small for me!
The local Dealership had an open house today, so I went there to see the sights, didn't stay very long, wasn't my kinda thing ( Riding wheelie contest - Burnout contest & Stunt riding )! While I was there I talked to the ABATE people & the next open class for beginner riding course is in August, So I am going to be signing up for the next available class this week.
Did take a few Pics of the Interceptors that I seen there, that I will post in my thread. ( On send thought I will post them in VFR Sighting thread)

ABATE, an acronym for "A brotherhood against totalitarian enactment" like the freedom to not wear head gear, boots, a jacket and pants so when you are all FUBAR an ABATE lawyer will be collecting the max amount on a contingency that is possible in Kentucky.

All this while you drool in your Top Ramen that somebody stole the noodles from.

They will also attempt to extract money from you. What you tell them is that if you give them money you can't buy the Harley you want.

Probably sounded great but do a search and check it out for yourself. Did they tell you you could name yourself "Mad Dog" ?

If you had half the sense that God gave the gerbil that you've got shoved up your ass, you'd realize that I'm talking about how you ride, than wearing "all the gear, all the time", not "none of the gear none of the time" like your ABATE post demonstrated.

If you don't ride for "fun" (someone had to put it in quotes), then it must be for some other reason - poseur. Or hoping that you'll get your dick wet from the little barista at Charbucks you're trying to make think you're cool.

Not much of a Starbucks fan. I have stock in the corporation. My fave? The Monorail Espresso downtown "Where every shot is a double." Where are you getting your smart gerbils? Actually from what I hear, gerbils are out and chinchillas are in. No current reports on their IQs'.

An ABATE member? LOL.. How's Richard Lester? Dude has made a fortune off the "believers" and herds of harleydoods.

Well XR, what it looks like is that your idea of fun includes stupidity. That is fine for you. Some of us think that fun and stupidity don't always have to go together. Sorry it makes you defensive. I will continue having fun and be dressed for the crash. You go knock yourslef out in your t-shirt. Hopefully you will never have to prove that you can take your lumps publicly after smearing yourself along a road somewhere.

    Get 'im Billy!

Amazing how someone can double down on a discussion of poor decision making. :tsk: You have lost the discussion when your only response is to attempt to insult those who are clearly just trying to enlighten. I guess your first crass response about the young lady's chest was the indicator that you were the proverbial jester at a funeral..... just out of place. :joker: :funky: Most of the rest of us, while on occasion pretty irreverent, usually don't stoop to demonstrating a nearly complete lack of decency and intellect.

You - trying to verbally fence w/ Billy is like someone bringing a toothpick to a Minigun fight. :chaingun:

Even great riders end up on the pavement. There are injuries that even the best gear won't prevent or minimize. We are all human (or nearly so, I think), and as part of that, we all make mistakes. Wearing the right gear is the complement to riding right, with training, etc., to reduce the chances of death or serious injury while riding (hmmmm..... Managing risk) BRC, ERC, Street rider course, Sportbike course, track days, etc..... Are what make for better riders. Wearing your gear is part of showing you understood the training, and showing non-riders (and potential riders) a better way to ride. The final exam is out on the street or the track.

When you are stubborn, it's hard to admit you are just plain wrong. :potstir:

Again, I just hope that you continue to be lucky while riding, and don't test your gear while commuting, or visit the ER with severe road rash when you choose not to wear your gear the rest of the time.

    :pop2:
