I've driven through about 38 of the US states, and probably 20 of them on my bike... and I've got to say that the streets of Boston and the highways in NYC (cross bronx expressway) are probably the WORST roads I've ever ridden on...

and the best city streets were probably Reno, Nevada...

I've never ridden my bike up and down the coast in CA, but I'd love to hear about some other cities to avoid/enjoy out there...

Are you talking just road surface or traffic or both?

completely agree... I travel through boston regularly and the road surface quality is nasty and the other drivers are absolutely nuts.
Only traveled through NYC once on a bike and now I try to avoid it, though I love the Merritt Parkway.

Atascadero has to be the best for road surface and traffic.

overall experience. I learned to drive a cage in downtown Boston, so I know its aggressive, but you throw random potholes and melted asphalt hills all over the road and you got yourself SERIOUS GUERRILLA tactics rolling now. but mostly the road conditions. Like when I drove from Virginia to Texas, when I left Georgia into Alabama, HOLY SHIT the road surface was like the moon suddenly... and then into Mississippi it calmed down just a tad.

Overall, good roads in north Mississippi, varies from county to county due to budget money for upkeep. My county "DeSoto" has nice smooth roads, they stay up on the maintenance. Memphis, TN has horrible roads, gotta be cautious when night riding!

The closer you are to the DC metro area, the shittier the roads are. Get a bit away from it all there's actual fresh, or at least not so molested, pavement underneath you. There's also considerably less traffic to contend with.

No shit. In recent years, it is like they are paving streets by linking pot hole repairs together. Add that to shitty original paving and you get shitty pavement close in to the city.

Like MC said get out a bit and the roads are nice.

as Randy will attest to: MANITOBA!

it doesnt matter where you go, its just bad. and repairs, if and when they do them, are just enough to make it to spring, sometimes. Plus side the father away from the cities you get they do improve to passable road but be alert.

--> Randy, BC has the best roads in all of Canada, even the 'bad' roads are actually more than tolerable.

Have to second what was said about Manitoba. Trans-Canada isn't bad but most other roads aren't great. Hwy 75 south, Hwy 15, 44 going to the Ontario border are bad. Roads in Winnipeg are crap!

I'll be back in NoVA by the end of the year, and before I left, I drove WEST to enjoy the rides... rte 50 from Dulles to Deep Creek is one of my favorites. I drive downtown DC a lot, but yeah, I don't enjoy that too much. DEFINITELY going to be doing the suspension upgrades soon.
