Whenever possible, I give my local dealer a shot at the business. His pricing is usually competitive, having a relationship with a local guy gets you other perks like the use of special tools, and they pay taxes an employ people in your own community.

+1 to Tink's comments. Its OK to shop around, but bring your internet pricing to your local guy. Sometimes they can match it, sometimes they can't. Either way, you win.

Here in Boston area there is no such thing as "local"
Dominate dealership gouge the costumers and don't give a fk. I stopped shopping from my "local dealer"
I even refuse to have them do inspection because I know they will try to screw you example Boston Motorsports Cambridge BMW Honda Kawasaki Suzuki Kymco Motorcycles ATVs Scooters Snowblowers Generators Power Equipment Personal Watercraft Dealer (stay away from these a-holes) my tires had only 4k miles PSports and the guy was trying to have me buy new tires.I threaten them to report BBB and finally passed me.
I feel better shopping on line and I believe lot of people the "local" does not exist anymore

I went in to a local dealer to get my bike inspected. Only one guy could take the work order. He was on phone while another mechanic waited to talk to him. I waited for at least 5-6 minutes looked around shop, but hung around the counter so I could talk to the "guy." Anyway finally gets off the phone and the mechanic starts talking to him real quietly, but I could hear. He said, "I dropped the cam. I was holding it by the cam chain and it slipped. I caught it right as it hit but it looks like I beat it with a hammer." Well I'm considering walking right out, but its just an inspection. He asks for the key and registration. Not thinking I hand over the keys and the registration. I look around and even though they has a lot of hondas on the floor they're not a honda dealer. I start thinking they probably have never seen a dct before. But after a couple of anxious moments I hear the bike get pulled into the garage. They finish the inspection and I pay grab my keys and will never be back. The Honda dealer that did the 600 mile service left the radiator cap loose and I started losing anti-freeze. I do most of my own maintenance now. I'll leave the 16,000 valve inspection to a pro, but one I know and trust.

for small order's of parts mason city honda does a 20% discount and free shipping powersportplus has low prices on big ticket items. The guy I trust turns away business and appreciates me handling the small stuff.

I don't expect them to match the prices as they have more overhead. If they can get close, I will buy. I have to factor in the costs of shipping and the hassle of crossing the border to pick them up so the local dealer has a chance of getting my business. If I shop on-line and have them ship to Canada, it tends to reduce the savings by quite a bit.

    For example,
This week I had the dealer quote me on headlights and they were over $100 more each than the on-line sources for the same OEM part. For the entire order they were $300 higher plus the 13% taxes on that figure so guess where I went?

I really won't deal with either of my local dealers anymore. Poor service=me going mail-order. I have been talked down to, ignored, and just plain treated rudely. I gave them more than one chance and they blew it. Plus they are too damned high. Given all that, I go to ronayers.com or servicehonda.com or bikebandit.com for oem and usually just ebay for misc stuff. When it comes to maintenance, I try to do it myself or get a friend who knows what they are doing. Still haven't decided what I'm doing about the next valve check...

Reg in your signature you might try ventosissimis. Actually having three semesters of Latin helped me on the vfrw forums.

Being in the service industry I fully understand buying & doing bussiness within the community.
BUT, when the Local Motorcycle Dealer & Honda service center tells you, " We Don't work on old junk like that!" (In referance to my Ready for the scrap heap Bike)
I have no desire or intention to do bussiness with them! Fortuniatly I found a local Cycle / ATV repair shop that is local & has a good reputation.

    They actually said that?

That is just rude........fkrs need a kick in the ass. I don't give a shit what you are riding, if you love and respect it, you are one of the brotherhood and should be welcomed with open arms.

They deserve to be black balled!

The one guy that I have taken my bikes to since I started riding I do like. I'm sure by the time he closes up shop for being too old I'll be done riding...maybe...but he's always been good and honest with me and all of the family members I've told to take their bikes to him as well. He's rude & crude and cracks me up. Calls up my ex wife just to call her fat. I was laughing so hard...tearing up still thinking about it...but anyway...he has always either pointed stuff out to me I didn't notice, recommended one thing over another, and is Honda Certified...several years ago, but still....The other guy that I trust and is beyond anal about all the bikes he works on I can never get in contact with, so....but for the most part I do buy from this guy unless he just cannot compete and he will say it to me (or the current wife) and be honest. He gets all of his parts via a dealership in NY (the two Honda dealerships in the area see him as a threat I guess) after the third one closed (which I went to school with the last owners daughter) but it is still employing a few people locally.
