Well I thought I had the deal sewed up but the guy sold the 07 to someone else and returned my deposite. More money of corse. Now I am looking again. between 1998 to 2012 in the $5500 range what are you opinions about the better years and which to stayaway from. I have read that the new generation i think it is 5th changed to vtec and surged a lot around 6500 rpm. I open to sugestions. thanks

mechanically, they are just as bulletproof. Comes down to personal preference so only you can make the decision.

    For clarification:

    5th Gen was 98 to 01.

    6th Gen was 02 to 09.

6th gen was the introduction of the Vtec. The "surge" that you "hear" about is all relative. I ride with a couple guys that have Vtec and none of them have any complaints about it. And besides, with a Power Commander (PC) it can be fixed and made to go away.

People on this site are usually particular to their model and generation. But I will clear the air for you. The fifth gen was hands down the best VFR ever made. And if you get one in yellow, its not only the best, but its the fastest. These are the facts. Just ask me, Drewl, or Tink. Hell, Tink even had to go out and BUILD a 5th fen and make it YELLOW. He's no dummy.

Just to add to comments above, which I agree with - its very much a personal choice thing.

Note the 6th Gen received a mid life update from model year 2006 with the main revision being the vtec engagement point was altered to make the transition smoother and the bike easier to live with in traffic. They also uprated the RR wiring - which had been known to go wrong on earlier 5th/6th gen models - so one to look closely for on earlier models.

The obvious spot is the orange indicators fitted on earlier models were replaced with clear ones (containing an orange bulb). You can encounter the odd earlier model where someone has fitted the later indicators - so check by getting them to unlock and remove the seat - then check the full tool kit is present and complete and examine the paint code sticker which should be revealed right by the tank which will state the manufactured year code and paint code. Oh in 2006 they also revised something on the ABS/combined link brakes models. If you can afford ABS its well worth considering - I can say from personal experience they can be a real lifesaver - allowing me to brake and just steer clear of a high speed collision with a loon on my side of the road on a blind bend.

The scary thing is how quickly prices for 7th Gen models in Europe are tumbling - there is one with just 2,000 miles on the clock for sale today in the UK for under £7,000 compared with a new price of over £13,000!

Good luck with the search - at that budget you should be able to get a good one.

I guess the 'new' generation now would be the 7th which started in 2010. That would be the 1200 and it's still a bit pricier than your range. I ride a 5th gen, but I like 3rd-7th gens pretty much. They all have little things here or there but all good bikes. Your price range should get you a good bike. Fuel injection started in 98 if that's something you must have. That's also when linked brakes started if that is something you don't want.

That kind of money will buy you a 5th gen. in PRIMO condition.

I ride a yellow 5th gen and I approve of this message. :gosteelers:

ya - with that money, I would buy a great condition 5gen for $3500 and then take the rest to get the suspension, seat, bars, and luggage all set up exactly how I wanted it.

You may want to consider taking the guy to small claims court as he accepted your deposit thereby creating a contract which he then broke. You'd be entitled to costs/expenses in continuing your search for a bike.

Ya I figure that is just the boss keeping me from making a mistake with a bad deal. If he is that type of person he get his sooner or later, I try not to let that stuf eat me up any more. It does not hurt him it only frustrates me. now road rage is differant. you can can get emediate satisfaction with a few well thought out and planned verberosisties! (kewl word hu you may use it when you wish to ostrosize someone, now it I could only smell, spell).
